Intel May Be Quietly Preparing a Bigger Push Into the Booming Memory Chip Market
Intel could be positioning itself for a much larger role in the high-margin memory chip business, as recent comments from the company and industry chatter suggest something more ambitious may be developing behind the scenes.
During Intel’s latest earnings call, investors focused heavily on two major updates. First, the company indicated that risk production for its advanced 14A process node is now expected to begin in 2027. Second, Intel said it plans to raise capital spending significantly next year, a move that typically suggests strong confidence in future customer demand.
That CapEx increase is especially notable because Intel has previously emphasized that it would not expand spending aggressively unless it had clear customer commitments. In other words, if Intel is preparing to spend more, it likely believes it has enough long-term demand to justify the investment.
But one of the most interesting parts of the earnings call came when Intel was asked about its memory strategy.
Intel has a long history in memory technology, and while the company is best known today for processors and foundry ambitions, it has not completely stepped away from memory innovation. One of its most notable upcoming technologies is Z-Angle Memory, also known as ZAM.
Z-Angle Memory is Intel’s approach to next-generation 3D-stacked DRAM. Unlike traditional designs that rely on vertical through-silicon vias, ZAM uses diagonal interconnects. This structure creates a central thermal pathway that can help move heat away more efficiently, a major challenge in tightly stacked memory designs.
The technology also uses copper-to-copper hybrid bonding and removes capacitors from the design, which could allow for higher density and improved performance. Intel is not expected to commercialize Z-Angle Memory until around 2029, but the concept shows that the company is already thinking seriously about the future of advanced memory.
What made Intel’s response during the earnings call stand out was its mention of Shou-Chi Lee, the former CEO of SK hynix, who recently joined Intel. Bringing up Lee specifically in the context of memory plans appears significant. SK hynix is one of the world’s most important memory companies, particularly in DRAM and high-bandwidth memory, both of which are increasingly critical for artificial intelligence, data centers, and advanced computing.
The timing has fueled speculation that Intel may be exploring deeper cooperation with SK hynix. One possibility being discussed in industry circles is a potential joint venture related to Intel’s massive Ohio One fab project. Such an arrangement could help Intel reduce some of the financial burden tied to the facility while also strengthening its ability to combine logic and memory technologies.
That combination is becoming more important as AI workloads demand faster data movement, higher memory bandwidth, and more efficient chip packaging. The future of computing is not just about faster processors; it is also about placing memory closer to compute engines and reducing bottlenecks between the two.
For Intel, a stronger memory strategy could support multiple goals at once. It could improve the company’s foundry business, create new opportunities in AI hardware, and give Intel a better position in advanced packaging and system-level chip design. It could also allow Intel to participate in a memory market that is currently enjoying strong pricing power and attractive margins.
Of course, Intel has not confirmed any major new memory partnership or joint venture. The company’s comments remain cautious, and Z-Angle Memory is still years away from commercial deployment. However, the reference to a former SK hynix chief executive during a discussion about memory was difficult to ignore.
At minimum, Intel appears to be laying the groundwork for a more serious push into advanced memory technologies. Whether that results in a partnership, a new product roadmap, or a broader foundry strategy remains to be seen.
What is clear is that memory is becoming too important for Intel to overlook. With AI demand accelerating, high-bandwidth memory becoming a key growth area, and chipmakers racing to improve performance per watt, Intel may be preparing to re-enter the memory conversation in a much bigger way.
