Just a decade ago, integrated GPUs (iGPUs) struggled with gaming, mainly serving media and video purposes. Fast forward to today, these iGPUs now rival entry-level discrete GPUs in performance, and Intel is determined to push their capabilities even further.
Intel’s strategy focuses on several key areas:
1. **Efficiency in Path Tracing**: Achieving high-fidelity effects like path tracing on low-power devices is a primary target. Path tracing demands significant computational power, but with innovations like Resampled Importance Sampling, visual quality is improved tenfold. This method reduces noise through advanced sampling techniques, providing clearer, more vibrant visuals without a hefty performance hit.
2. **Neural Graphics and AI Acceleration**: Intel is enhancing its Open Image Denoiser library to support all major GPUs, shifting towards neural network architectures to boost both performance and visual quality. A notable highlight from Intel’s presentation was the demonstration of their “Path Tracing a Trillion Triangles” on an Intel Arc B580 GPU. The demo showcased a Jungle Ruins scene with dynamic elements, path traced at 1440p, achieving 30 FPS. This emphasizes Intel’s commitment to bringing high-end visual experiences to low-power hardware.
Intel also introduced hardware-accelerated texture set neural compression (TSNC), which, in combination with DirectX Cooperative Vectors, offers a staggering performance boost, significantly lowering texture memory usage while enhancing visual output.
