Intel Set to Pioneer 1.5 nm Chip Production with New Magdeburg Fab in Germany

Intel Corporation, the renowned semiconductor company, is gearing up to take a leap forward in the cutting-edge chip manufacturing realm with its new facility under construction in Magdeburg, Germany. CEO Pat Gelsinger announced that this fab is set to be the first of Intel’s facilities to roll out sub-18A chips, marking a significant advancement beyond current production nodes.

According to CEO Pat Gelsinger, who shared insights at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Magdeburg fab represents Intel’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in semiconductor technology. Despite being behind TSMC in advanced production nodes, Intel is pushing ahead with its roadmap, with the Arrow Lake CPUs utilizing 20A technology slated for a late 2024 launch. The subsequent 18A process is expected to begin its production run in the second half of 2024, potentially leading to CPU releases the following year.

The ambition doesn’t end there, as Intel aims to set the pace in manufacturing technology with future processes. Though precise details are sparse, Germany’s Magdeburg fab is poised to become the bedrock of Intel’s post-18A node production, making it potentially the most sophisticated facility in Intel’s arsenal. The fab is not only pivotal for Intel’s in-house chip production but also for Intel Foundry Services’ clientele, underscoring the company’s expanding presence in the foundry industry.

Intel’s investment in the region has been bolstered by a sizable €10 billion subsidy, setting the stage for Magdeburg to initiate production of chips as minuscule as 1.5 nm. While the exact timeline for the fab’s operational debut is indeterminate, it may align with Intel’s prospective rollout of chips based on the 16A and 14A nodes around 2026.

As the semiconductor competition intensifies, industry observers are keenly awaiting to see how Intel’s sub-18A nodes compare to rivals like TSMC’s and Samsung’s 2 nm technology.
