Intel has taken another step forward in developing its upcoming Battlemage (BMG) GPU series by incorporating it into their Media Drivers. Although this move marks an early stage of support, it sets the groundwork for what is anticipated to be a significant release in the discrete GPU market for both laptops and desktops, likely to launch next year.
Battlemage is Intel’s intriguing codename for its next generation of graphics processing units, but official details remain scarce as Intel has yet to make any formal announcements. Despite the quiet front from the marketing team, Intel’s engineering teams are actively engaged in enhancing software and hardware backing, as seen through the updates and patches in open-source initiatives like the Media Driver for the Video Acceleration API (VAAPI).
In the video decoding and encoding matrix, support for BMG isn’t robust yet, with noticeable gaps in encoding capabilities compared to its predecessor, Lunar Lake. Notably, the existing matrix shows no encoding support for popular codecs, a functionality that’s expected to be integrated with future updates, considering the encoding capabilities of previous processors.
Interestingly, Battlemage currently lacks support for the VVC (Versatile Video Coding) standard known as H.266. VVC, championed for its efficiency, offers up to 50% more compression efficiency compared to the previous H.265/HEVC standard—an advantage that still needs matching hardware support in Intel’s future offerings.
While Intel continues to work on and adjust Battlemage’s capabilities, it’s evident that there’s a keen dedication to developing this new GPU line. Keep an eye out for future updates as Intel inches closer to delivering on the promise of this advanced GPU architecture.
