Intel is making waves in the tech world with a significant move regarding its upcoming Nova Lake CPUs. Team Blue is revamping its strategy by placing substantial 2nm orders with TSMC, aiming to regain its stronghold in the desktop processor arena. This decision signals a noteworthy shift in Intel’s approach, leaning towards a dual-sourcing strategy for its future desktop CPUs.
Under new leadership, Intel appears determined to deliver top-notch performance to its consumers. Reports reveal that Intel has entrusted the compute tile for Nova Lake to TSMC, utilizing the advanced 2nm process from the Taiwanese foundry. This collaboration has raised questions about Intel’s own 18A process node, which was touted to outperform TSMC’s N2.
Intel’s Products CEO, Michelle Johnston Holthaus, emphasized the company’s commitment to meeting consumer expectations, even if it means stepping away from Intel Foundry for certain projects. Although Intel’s flagship offerings may not rely solely on its in-house processes, a dual-source approach ensures a balance between innovation and reliability.
The tech industry’s major players are all casting a keen eye on TSMC’s 2nm process. With Apple and AMD already in line, Intel’s engagement only adds to the intrigue. AMD has already secured a spot as a first customer for its 6th-generation EPYC “Venice” processors, and Apple plans to use the process for its A20 chip and iPhone 18 series. This development highlights the competitive race to integrate this cutting-edge technology, which comes with increased costs amid supply chain challenges.
Intel, however, is not forsaking its proprietary technologies. The company plans to feature its 18A node with upcoming series like Panther Lake SoCs and Clearwater Forest Xeon. The success of these internally developed technologies will likely influence Intel’s strategies moving forward.
