Instacart Launches Clementine, an AI Grocery Assistant That Builds Your Cart From Recipes, Lists, and Meal Ideas
Instacart is bringing conversational AI deeper into grocery shopping with the launch of Clementine, a new AI-powered assistant designed to help customers plan meals, build shopping carts, and save money with less effort.
Clementine can turn everyday requests into a ready-to-shop grocery cart. Instead of manually searching for every item, users can simply type what they need, share a grocery list, or start with a recipe idea. The assistant then helps organize the order and suggests relevant products available through Instacart.
The goal is to make grocery shopping feel more like a conversation. A customer could ask for “a week of budget-friendly kids’ lunches,” “easy high-protein dinners for two,” or “order my usuals,” and Clementine will use that prompt to recommend meals, ingredients, and products that match the request.
The new feature is aimed at solving one of the most common household problems: figuring out what to eat and what to buy. Instacart says Clementine can help users decide on dinner, simplify weekly meal planning, and keep grocery spending under control.
Clementine can also generate personalized recipes or suggest recipes from trusted publishers. Its recommendations can be tailored around household preferences and dietary needs, including gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, and organic options. That makes the assistant especially useful for families or shoppers who need to balance convenience with specific food requirements.
Budget-conscious shoppers may also benefit from Clementine’s ability to surface deals, promotions, and lower-cost alternatives. If a suggested item is expensive or unavailable, the assistant can recommend a more affordable option, helping customers adjust their carts before checkout.
Another useful feature is list recognition. Users can upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital list, and Clementine can convert it into an Instacart cart. This could save time for shoppers who already keep lists on paper, in notes apps, or from shared family messages.
The launch reflects a larger shift in the grocery delivery market. Delivery platforms are no longer focused only on helping customers buy groceries quickly. They are increasingly trying to become part of the planning process, helping users decide what to cook, what ingredients they need, and how to shop smarter.
By adding AI meal planning and cart-building tools, Instacart wants to keep customers inside its app from the moment they start thinking about meals to the moment they place an order. Instead of using a separate chatbot or recipe app to plan dinner, shoppers can now use Clementine to move directly from idea to checkout.
Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart, said the company has spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine is designed to put that knowledge to work. He described the nightly question of “What’s for dinner?” as a familiar challenge for millions of households and one that Instacart aims to help solve.
Clementine is now available to users in the United States and Canada.
