Innovative Online Platform UPchieve Offers Complimentary Resource for Educators to Aid Low-Income Students

UPchieve, a groundbreaking app offering free, round-the-clock online tutoring and college counseling for low-income students, has unveiled an exciting new service for educators. This latest launch, dubbed “UPchieve for Teachers,” serves as an invaluable resource for teachers in Title 1 middle and high schools, providing them with the tools to ensure their students receive the academic support they desperately need.

With UPchieve for Teachers, educators can now directly offer 1:1 tutoring support to their students. They have the ability to invite students to register for tutoring, create classrooms, and closely monitor how students are engaging with the platform. Previously, students had to individually sign up for these services, but this new feature allows teachers to actively recommend students for personalized tutoring sessions at no cost. Even more impressive, in the coming weeks, teachers will also be able to assign tutoring sessions to entire classes.

This new tool is available specifically to educators in Title 1 schools, which are federally funded institutions with a high percentage of low-income families. With nearly 43% of public schools in the United States qualifying for Title 1 funding, this initiative stands to benefit countless students who may not have been previously aware of or sought out free academic assistance.

“The product is going to be really valuable to teachers because it’s going to help them accomplish some of the hardest parts of their job,” founder Aly Murray explained enthusiastically. “Students are coming into the class with different gaps in their foundational skills. Teachers have to try to support all of their students, but there’s not enough time to support each student individually, so that’s a natural place where a tutor can help. We’re really excited about launching a product that’s going to give teachers more control.”

Founded in 2016 by Aly Murray, shortly after her graduation from the University of Pennsylvania, UPchieve aims to help students who face similar challenges that Murray once did. Growing up as a low-income student, Murray struggled to find academic support and was often left to navigate her educational journey on her own. She founded UPchieve to ensure that students in similar situations can access help any time, even late at night when they might be working on homework.

“I was raised by a single mom, and as an immigrant to the United States, she often wasn’t able to help me with schoolwork and with my college applications. And so that had a big impact on my life. It made things very difficult, and I found that I often needed help late at night when there was really nowhere I could turn to for support,” Murray shared poignantly.

Since its inception, UPchieve has made impressive strides, having matched over 190,000 tutoring requests from more than 20,000 students across the nation. Available on both web and mobile platforms, UPchieve offers 24/7 online tutoring in over 30 subjects, including math, science, English, history, and the humanities. Tutoring sessions are conducted via an in-app messenger or voice chat, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for all users.

One of the standout features of UPchieve is its volunteer-based tutoring system. Anyone in 9th grade or higher can volunteer to tutor, provided they pass a thorough background screening, training, and certification process. With around 2,400 active tutors, UPchieve ensures that volunteers are well-prepared to assist students by requiring them to pass quizzes in every subject they wish to tutor.

As part of its continuous innovation, UPchieve incorporates OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology to support tutors with AI-generated feedback and progress reports. Future plans include utilizing AI to create practice problems and summaries of tutoring sessions, giving teachers even more insights into their students’ academic progress. However, Murray reassures that there are no intentions of replacing human tutors with AI anytime soon.

Operating as a nonprofit, UPchieve relies heavily on donations, grants, and paid partnerships with educational institutions and corporations. Its list of supporters includes prominent names like Atlassian, AT&T, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Guggenheim Capital, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, the Skyline Foundation, and Verizon.

Currently partnered with over 50 schools, each partnership is established with a yearly fee of $10,000. UPchieve also boasts graduation from Y Combinator’s Winter 2021 batch, further solidifying its reputation and reach.

In 2023, UPchieve raised over $4 million through a combination of philanthropy and earned revenue from paid partnerships, reporting an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $840,000 derived solely from these partnerships.

These significant milestones underscore UPchieve’s unwavering commitment to providing accessible, quality education to all students, echoing its mission to close the educational support gap for low-income students and empowering them to achieve their full potential.
