The technological landscape of computing has seen another leap forward with Intel’s introduction of their state-of-the-art 800-series chipsets and the announcement of the innovative LGA 1851 socket. As enthusiasts and professionals alike eagerly anticipate the advancements of the Core Ultra 200S CPU series, this new socket marks the end of the LGA 1700’s dominance, after a powerful three-year run.
Today’s spotlight shines brightly on MSI’s latest offerings within the entry-level motherboard market, specifically the MAG B860 Tomahawk WIFI and the MAG B860M Mortar WIFI. These motherboards are built on the newly unveiled, wallet-friendly B860 chipset—a platform setting a new standard in affordability without compromising performance.
Engineered for the LGA 1851 platform, the B860 motherboards showcase the evolution of Intel’s technology. They feature an impressive 34 PCIe lanes, with 20 dedicated to the cutting-edge PCIe Gen 5.0, sourced directly from both the CPU and PCH. The versatility of the B860 extends further with capabilities such as 14 PCIe 4.0 lanes, a range of USB 3.2 ports featuring 20G and 10G options, as well as USB 2.0 and SATA III links.
When it comes to memory, these motherboards support DDR5 capabilities up to DDR5-6400 natively, with the potential to reach over 8000 MT/s using XMP profiles. They are designed to accommodate up to 48 GB per DIMM, offering total memory capacities that can expand to a substantial 192 GB across various memory module formats.
An important aspect of the LGA 1851 socket is its backward compatibility with the coolers designed for LGA 1700 sockets. Although some cooler models may need an additional offset kit to maintain optimal thermal performance, the RL-ILM (Revised Load Mechanism) ensures the new processors will function with just the right amount of pressure balance.
Intel’s strategic advancements with the Arrow Lake lineup, paired with MSI’s innovative design in motherboards, signal a promising future of enhanced computing capabilities and the progression towards more efficient, powerful systems. This new era of the LGA 1851 platform underlines a commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology while maintaining adaptability and performance.
