Hytale Roars Back: Early Access Smashes 1 Million Players as the $19.99 Sandbox RPG Defies the Odds

Hytale is back in a big way. After years of uncertainty and a headline-making cancellation-to-revival journey, the sandbox RPG has launched in Early Access and has already surged past 1 million players. For a game that many fans have long described as a Minecraft-style adventure with deeper RPG and modding potential, the demand has been enormous from the moment servers opened.

Early Access went live on January 13 at 7 a.m. PST, with the Starter Edition priced at $19.99. Players can jump in on PC, Mac, and Linux, and the overnight rush suggests there’s been a massive appetite for a fresh blocky sandbox experience—especially one with Hytale’s mix of exploration, building, combat, and creative tools.

This launch is also a remarkable turnaround for Hypixel Studios. The project was acquired by Riot Games in 2020, then later canceled in June 2025. Not long after that announcement, the original founders regained the rights to both Hytale and Hypixel Studios for an undisclosed amount. From there, development restarted with prior builds in November 2025, leading to an Early Access release that arrived quickly—roughly eight weeks after the initial announcement of the comeback.

With that kind of momentum and a million-plus players trying to get in, some launch-week turbulence was inevitable. The studio publicly warned that the first week could be “bumpy” due to demand exceeding expectations, while also reassuring players that everyone will be able to access the game. So far, early community feedback points to a relatively manageable rollout: players have reported login queues, but they appear to be short enough that most people are simply waiting them out while server load stabilizes.

Hypixel Studios is also signaling that this is only the beginning. The team says it’s already working through bugs and crashes, with fixes planned as rapid patches. As more updates roll out and Early Access evolves, players can expect ongoing improvements aimed at stabilizing performance and expanding what’s playable in this revived version of Hytale.

For fans who followed every twist and delay, Hytale’s Early Access launch feels less like a typical release and more like the start of a second life—one that’s already attracting a massive audience and setting the stage for frequent updates in the weeks ahead.
