Huawei has found itself in a unique position due to the ongoing US trade sanctions preventing the company from using Google Mobile Services (GMS). In response, Huawei developed its own operating system, HarmonyOS. Now, the tech giant is on the verge of unveiling HarmonyOS NEXT, a significant step forward as it ditches the Android framework entirely. This means, unfortunately, Android apps will no longer be directly supported.
While this shift may not ruffle many feathers in China, where local apps dominate, it presents a challenge for global users who rely heavily on Android applications. Yet, there’s a glimmer of hope for these users. Rumor has it that Huawei might be exploring a solution to bridge this gap. According to tech insider RuiPlaysDigital, Huawei could introduce a “dual-framework” software structure with its upcoming Mate 70 series, a flagship lineup expected to make waves.
This potential setup could involve HarmonyOS NEXT running alongside a framework that supports Android apps. Such an approach would enable the Mate 70 series to appeal to a broader audience worldwide. However, it’s important to note that while this could allow the installation of Android apps via APK files, it will not include the official Google Mobile Services.
As of now, Huawei has not confirmed these speculations about the dual-framework system. Therefore, these details should be viewed cautiously until Huawei officially unveils HarmonyOS NEXT on October 22. This announcement could bring a much clearer picture of what the future holds for Huawei’s global user base.
