Apple and Huawei are fiercely competing for dominance in China’s premium smartphone market, each employing aggressive strategies to win over consumers. Apple is offering significant discounts on a range of iPhone models as part of its New Year sale, aiming to outshine its competition. Not one to be left behind, Huawei has responded with substantial price cuts on its high-end devices, including its new Pura 70 Ultra smartphone.
In China, Huawei and Apple hold significant shares of the premium handset segment, with Huawei capturing 52% and Apple 33%. Premium smartphones are typically those priced over $600, and while Huawei has faced some competition with its Mate 70 series, it remains a formidable presence in the market.
One of the standout deals from Huawei is the Pura 70 Ultra, which now boasts a hefty 18% discount. Originally priced at 10,999 yuan, the 1TB storage version is now available for 8,999 yuan, or from $1,494 to $1,233. Additionally, the 512GB variant is available at a 20% discount, following a previous price reduction of 1,000 yuan last summer.
Huawei’s foldable option, the Mate X5, is also seeing a significant price drop of 19%, bringing it down to 10,499 yuan ($343). Despite being released in September 2023, it remains a popular choice in the foldable category from last year.
While the Mate 70 series hasn’t met sales expectations, partly due to being powered by the Kirin 9020 processor, which uses a 7nm node, falling short of Apple’s cutting-edge 3nm chips found in the iPhone 16 lineup, Huawei is optimistic. Analysts from Counterpoint Research have predicted sales of at least 10 million units for this series.
Huawei faces stiff competition from local brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo, but its strategic introduction of the HarmonyOS operating system is a potential game-changer. This new OS is designed to challenge Android’s dominance in the region, and it already boasts a large number of apps.
Meanwhile, Apple remains a strong contender in China’s competitive market, offering an alternative to the prevalent Android systems with its iOS platform. Its ongoing promotions are a pivotal factor in maintaining its appeal.
Both companies are pulling out all the stops to captivate consumers in one of the world’s most lucrative smartphone markets, and it’s clear that innovation and strategic pricing will continue to play crucial roles in this high-stakes competition. Stay tuned for more updates as Apple and Huawei continue this intense rivalry.
