The Ai Pin, once touted as a groundbreaking innovation, sadly joined the ranks of overhyped tech products that failed to meet expectations. Humane, the company behind this pocketable device, found itself grappling with the aftermath as their $699 gadget hit the market labeled as ‘dead on arrival.’ This misstep left Humane vulnerable, eventually leading to its acquisition by tech giant HP.
HP’s purchase includes crucial assets like approximately 300 patents and the majority of Humane’s workforce. However, one thing excluded from the deal is the Ai Pin itself, sealing its fate as a discontinued project.
Co-founded by former Apple employees, Humane initially sought a buyout valuing between $750 million and $1 billion. However, given the Ai Pin’s performance, it became apparent that no entity was willing to invest such a substantial amount. Ultimately, HP concluded the acquisition for $116 million, but this does not include efforts to sustain the Ai Pin.
For those who invested in the Ai Pin, it is important to note that starting February 28, 2025, the device will lose its connection to Humane’s servers, essentially rendering it non-functional. The company urges Ai Pin users to sync their gadgets over Wi-Fi to preserve any crucial data, such as pictures, videos, and notes, before this date. This step ensures that users will not face data loss when the server connection is severed.
In this acquisition, Humane’s founders, Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, will join HP, spearheading a new division dedicated to integrating AI into HP’s array of products, including PCs and printers. Many from the Humane team are expected to transition to this new venture as well.
While Ai Pin users may be disappointed by this turn of events, there’s a sliver of consolation: those eligible can request a refund if they purchased the device within the initial 90-day return period. Additionally, users with active subscriptions will receive prorated refunds based on their usage time.
It’s a cautionary tale in the tech world about managing expectations and the harsh realities of innovative endeavors. The hope is that the expertise from Humane, now under HP’s wing, will lead to more successful ventures in the realm of artificial intelligence.
