Hot Tub Makes Waves as Europe’s First Homegrown iPhone Adult App

Europe is paving the way for new digital terrain with the introduction of a native pornography app for iOS, thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This legislation has facilitated the emergence of AltStore PAL, an approved alternative app store that proudly introduces “Hot Tub.” This app allows iOS users in the EU to explore and stream content from popular adult websites such as Pornhub, Xvideos, XNXX, and XHamster.

While iPhone users could always access these sites via a web browser, the DMA now enables developers to launch apps through alternative marketplaces, effectively bypassing Apple’s App Store Guidelines. Such publishers have the liberty to decide which apps to feature, even those traditionally prohibited.

Though developers have to meet Apple’s “baseline platform integrity standards” through a Notarization process, alternative stores can distribute unrated apps potentially hosting content like adult material, among other sensitive areas. AltStore takes this opportunity to claim that Hot Tub is the first to successfully navigate this approval process, facing no resistance from Apple—likely due to the app fitting examples Apple has come to expect under the DMA.

In a commendable move, AltStore’s creator Riley Testut announced plans to donate Patreon earnings from February to organizations supporting sex workers and the LGBTQ+ community, including The Trevor Project and Red Umbrella Fund. Through social media, they emphasized the importance of these donations as a stand against detrimental policies from global businesses and political entities.

The Hot Tub app originates from an independent developer, known as c1d3r, previously engaged in the jailbreaking community. Jailbreaking involves bypassing Apple’s security layers to install unauthorized apps on devices. Designed as a native alternative to adult websites, Hot Tub offers protection from ads, trackers, and intrusive pop-ups, while boasting enhanced search capabilities, gesture controls, and subscriber-specific features like advanced filtering and categories.

This groundbreaking development promises not just to redefine convenience and privacy in accessing adult content, but also to spark broader conversations about the future of app distribution on iOS devices under new market regulations.
