Samsung made waves as the first company to introduce the foldable phone, reshaping the smartphone landscape and setting a trend that many others followed. Initially leading the market, the South Korean tech giant’s dominance in the foldable phone arena has faced significant challenges as competition intensified. Despite the substantial innovations brought by the Galaxy Z Fold 6, it wasn’t enough to fend off the growing rivalry, particularly from Honor, which has been making headlines with its upcoming Magic V3.
A recent report reveals that Honor has already overtaken Samsung in foldable phone sales in the second-largest global market, even before unveiling its newest model.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 didn’t have the market impact the company hoped for, prompting Samsung to develop a potentially game-changing Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. This new variant promises a sleeker design and upgraded camera features, anticipated to launch later this month. However, Honor’s Magic V3 appears to have captured significant attention and sales momentum ahead of its official release.
Counterpoint Research reports that Honor has secured the lead over Samsung in the European market, which is the second-largest globally for foldable phones. Honor’s Magic V3, recognized as the world’s thinnest foldable at just 9.2mm, outshines Samsung’s upcoming Z Fold special edition in both specs and anticipated pricing.
Further analysis indicates Samsung’s challenges extend beyond Europe. In China, local competitors like Huawei are dominating, adding pressure on Samsung. Highlighting Honor’s rapid growth, the research notes:
“Honor aggressively expanded into European and Asia Pacific markets, achieving a staggering 455% year-over-year increase in global foldable shipments in Q2 2024, the highest growth rate among all brands. The ultra-slim Magic V2, less than 10mm when folded, was the most-shipped book-type foldable globally in Q2 2024, excluding China where Huawei leads.”
With the standout success of Honor’s Magic V3 and other competitive foldable phones entering the fray, Samsung may need to pursue more significant innovations and adopt a more competitive pricing strategy to maintain its foothold in the market. The scenario suggests a pivotal moment for Samsung to rethink its annual updates and focus on groundbreaking advancements to stay ahead.
