For the first time in over 50 years, Samsung employees have initiated a strike, signaling a significant moment in the company’s history. The workers, led by the National Samsung Electronics Union, have called for higher wages and a share in the company’s substantial profits. This demand for improved monetary compensation comes as Samsung reports an impressive 933 percent increase in operating profits for the first quarter of 2024.
This labor dispute, involving roughly 28,000 employees, comes at a time when Samsung is facing fierce competition in advancing artificial intelligence technologies. Employees, who have assembled around the company’s Seoul headquarters, are looking for recognition of their contributions to the company’s recent success.
Samsung offered the employees a 5.1 percent raise, falling short of the union’s request for a 6.5 percent increase and additional bonuses tied to profits. This impasse has led to the unprecedented strike action. Despite the protest, Samsung maintains that there has been no negative impact on production or business operations, due to the timing of the strike which followed a public holiday—allowing for preparation as many employees were on leave.
The manufacturing of key components such as DRAM or NAND flash memory is expected to remain unaffected by the strike, as these processes are highly automated and the majority of the participants are from the office staff rather than production lines. Consequently, the protest is thought not to have caused significant disruptions or losses for Samsung.
As the stalemate continues, further actions are being planned by the union. The full extent of these measures is yet to be disclosed, but it indicates an escalation in the union’s response to the unresolved salary negotiations.
While the situation unfolds, many anticipate updates on any progress in discussions or additional actions taken by the involved employees. This event not only impacts the workers themselves but also sheds light on labor relations within major tech corporations during times of financial growth and technology development.
