Helldivers 2: Compatibility and Performance on Linux and Steam Deck

Helldivers 2, the sequel to the popular co-op shooter developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, has officially landed on PC and PlayStation 5. The game, which launched on February 8, has proven to be a hit with an impressive peak player count on steam not long after its release. The PlayStation 5 version of the game is faring well on the Sony Store with a 4.5-star rating from over 2,000 reviews. However, the reception has been cooler on Steam, where it has garnered a “mixed” average rating, owed mainly to technical issues as reported by users.

Despite the initial enthusiasm, Linux and Steam Deck gamers are facing challenges. The title is classified as “borked” on ProtonDB, meaning it has major issues. On desktop Linux installations, such as Kubuntu 23.10, the game might work fine with Proton 8.0-5. Yet, some players on Linux and consistently on the Steam Deck have issues getting the game to launch with any version of Proton.

In an attempt to offer a solution, it has been reported by users on GitHub that playing Helldivers 2 on the Steam Deck is possible by using the unofficial Proton GE, a version maintained by developer Thomas “GloriousEggroll” Crider. Nevertheless, to run the game using Proton GE, Steam Deck users have to switch to desktop mode. This workaround is necessary due to the game’s “nProtect GameGuard” anti-cheat system, which is incompatible with the regular Gaming Mode on the device. An additional note mentions the need to tap the touchscreen to get the controller controls activated once the game is running.

While some workarounds exist, it’s wise to exercise caution before purchasing Helldivers 2 for Linux or Steam Deck. The integration of nProtect GameGuard, which operates at the kernel level, poses a risk of future updates disrupting playability on these platforms. Hence, it is recommended to hold off on buying the Steam version if one’s purpose is to use it in conjunction with Proton, the Linux compatibility layer.

Helldivers 2 has certainly made an impact in its initial release phase, with a significant number of players enjoying what it has to offer. However, Linux and Steam Deck gamers may need to be patient for better support or confirmed workarounds before they can reliably join the cooperative battles in this space-themed shooter.
