Mistbound Brings Guild Wars Into the Collectible Card Game Arena for PC and Mobile
NC, ArenaNet, and bilibili have revealed Mistbound, a new collectible card game set in the beloved Guild Wars universe. Licensed by ArenaNet, developed by NC, and published globally by bilibili, the upcoming strategy title is planned for both PC and mobile, giving longtime fans and newcomers a fresh way to experience the world of Tyria.
Mistbound is designed around competitive PvP card battles, but it is not simply a traditional card game with Guild Wars artwork attached. Instead, the developers are building a tactical experience where positioning, movement, and battlefield control are just as important as the cards in a player’s deck.
ArenaNet Studio Head Colin Johanson said the team wanted to give Guild Wars fans a new way to play together, one inspired by the franchise’s early card-game roots. The goal is to bring familiar characters, creatures, sounds, and locations from Tyria into a competitive collectible card game format while preserving the atmosphere that players associate with Guild Wars.
At the center of Mistbound is a 5 x 3 tactical grid where players act as commanders, deploying cards and moving units across the battlefield. This system, described by the developers as Dynamic Movement Gameplay, allows units to reposition in multiple directions each turn. Rather than leaving cards locked in place, Mistbound encourages players to constantly react to enemy movements, set up attacks, defend key positions, and take advantage of shifting opportunities.
That movement-focused design is meant to make every match feel unpredictable. Players can use knockbacks, pulls, flanking tactics, and offensive or defensive repositioning to control the flow of battle. These mechanics add an extra layer of strategy without making the basic rules difficult to understand.
Hwang Sunwoo, Producer of Mistbound at NC, explained that one of the biggest challenges in strategic card games is avoiding cards that become too complicated on their own. Instead of putting all the complexity into individual card text, Mistbound aims to place much of the tactical depth on the battlefield itself. The team wants the game to keep expanding over time with more choices, more combinations, and long-term replay value.
Mistbound is also designed to be approachable for new players. Baek Hakjun, the game’s designer and former professional Hearthstone player known as Kranich, said the core idea is easy to grasp: place units on the battlefield and use them in combat. However, as players continue learning, they begin to understand the importance of each turn, each movement, and each decision. The deeper satisfaction comes from reading the board, predicting the opponent’s plans, and taking control of the match.
Commanders will play a major role in Mistbound. Unlike passive support figures who stay behind the action, commanders actively participate in battle and can become powerful playmakers. Their abilities and traits can shift momentum, open new strategies, and create dramatic comeback moments.
Several familiar Guild Wars characters have already been listed for the game, including Marshal Trahearne, Countess Anise, and Knut Whitebear from Guild Wars 2, along with Nika from Guild Wars Factions. More characters are expected to be revealed as development continues.
Mistbound will also draw directly from the nine professions of Guild Wars 2. By allowing players to pair commanders with different professions, the game aims to capture the franchise’s recognizable combat styles while opening the door to new tactical combinations. This system could give players a wide range of deck-building possibilities, encouraging experimentation with different commander identities, profession abilities, and battlefield strategies.
For Guild Wars fans, Mistbound represents another step in the broader expansion of the franchise. It follows recent announcements tied to the future of Guild Wars, including Guild Wars 3, Guild Wars Reforged, and continued development for Guild Wars 2.
With its mix of collectible card game mechanics, tactical grid combat, iconic characters, and Guild Wars-inspired class design, Mistbound could stand out in a crowded genre. By focusing on movement, positioning, and board control, the game is aiming to offer something more dynamic than a standard digital card battler.
Mistbound is currently in development for PC and mobile. A release date has not yet been announced.
