A new insider report suggests Microsoft could be heading into the biggest gaming launch in years with a major disadvantage: not enough Xbox consoles on store shelves when Grand Theft Auto VI arrives.
Even with recent price increases across the console market, the GTA 6 release date is widely expected to ignite a massive new wave of demand for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Big Rockstar Games launches historically move hardware, pull lapsed players back in, and convince fence-sitters to finally buy a current-gen system. The problem is that Xbox stock in many regions is already thin, and the situation may get worse at exactly the wrong time.
Why Xbox Series X|S consoles can be hard to find
Industry commentary points to a business strategy focused on hitting an aggressive profit target for hardware—reportedly around a 30% margin. The unintended consequence is that Xbox console production and distribution may not have been treated as a top priority in certain markets, making systems harder to find at retailers.
The argument isn’t that interest in Xbox has vanished. Instead, demand may be “respectable” but consumers can’t buy what isn’t readily available. In some countries, Xbox consoles are described as especially rare, with Japan often mentioned as a market where finding Series X|S stock can be unusually difficult.
The memory shortage could hit Xbox at the worst possible time
The bigger threat is a continued component squeeze, particularly tied to memory pricing and availability. If key parts remain expensive or already locked up by competitors, replenishing inventory becomes harder—especially if long-term supply agreements weren’t secured early enough.
One criticism is that competitors planning on an annual horizon have already purchased the memory supply they need, while shorter-term planning can leave manufacturing more exposed when shortages tighten. If that’s accurate, Microsoft may be entering the GTA 6 window with fewer options to quickly scale production.
What this means for GTA 6 console sales and the PS5 vs Xbox race
If GTA 6 launches while Xbox Series X|S units remain scarce, Sony could widen its lead simply by having more PS5 consoles available when buyers are ready to spend. That effect can snowball during the holiday season, when blockbuster releases and gift shopping collide and the “best console” often becomes “the one you can actually find.”
There’s also ongoing chatter that Rockstar’s marketing could lean heavily toward PlayStation. If PS5 or PS5 Pro bundles tied to GTA 6 appear around launch, it could further strengthen the perception that PlayStation is the default home for the game—even if GTA 6 is still a multi-platform release.
Will GTA 6 feel like a PlayStation-first game?
With no confirmed PC release date and no confirmed version for other next-generation platforms, PS5 is positioned to be the main destination for GTA 6 at launch. That reality has fueled commentary that the game could feel “almost” like a PlayStation exclusive in terms of mindshare and marketing presence, especially if Xbox hardware remains hard to buy.
Still, even under a constrained supply scenario, expectations remain that millions of copies will sell on Xbox Series X|S. The question is whether Microsoft misses out on a larger share of the biggest gaming moment of the decade simply because there aren’t enough consoles in stores.
Could Microsoft get another chance later?
Looking beyond launch, there’s speculation that Microsoft could benefit from GTA 6 again in future years, depending on when the game expands to additional platforms and how Microsoft’s next hardware strategy evolves. If a later Windows release happens and Microsoft’s upcoming plans align with PC-console crossover concepts, it could open another revenue window—though how that would work in practice remains unclear.
For now, the core issue is straightforward: the GTA 6 release date is expected to drive massive console demand, and Microsoft may need to solve its inventory and component challenges fast if it wants Xbox Series X|S to fully capitalize on the hype.
