Grand Seiko has introduced two new Japan-exclusive mechanical watches, the SLGH039 and STGK039, available only at Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate, Japan. Both models feature elegant ivory dials, exhibition casebacks, and design details inspired by the studio where Grand Seiko’s mechanical watches are crafted.
The new Grand Seiko SLGH039 and STGK039 went on sale on October 9, but collectors will not find them in regular boutiques or online stores. To purchase either model, buyers must visit Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in northern Japan, where entry is available by reservation only. Each visitor is allowed to purchase one of each watch.
Interestingly, Grand Seiko has not described either model as a limited edition. There is no announced production number, which means these watches are exclusive by location rather than by a fixed quantity. That makes them especially appealing to enthusiasts who value destination-only releases and watches with a strong connection to place.
Both watches share a refined ivory dial with an embossed tree-ring pattern. The texture is inspired by the wood used throughout the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi building, giving the watches a subtle architectural and natural link to their birthplace. A gold seconds hand adds warmth to the dial, while the date window sits at 3 o’clock for everyday practicality.
The Grand Seiko SLGH039 is the larger and more technically prominent of the two. It comes in a 40 mm Ever-Brilliant Steel case measuring 11.7 mm thick and 47 mm lug-to-lug. Inside is the high-beat Caliber 9SA5, one of Grand Seiko’s most impressive modern mechanical movements. It runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour and offers an approximate 80-hour power reserve. Accuracy is rated at +5 to -3 seconds per day.
Turn the SLGH039 over and the sapphire exhibition caseback reveals the movement along with “Shizukuishi Exclusive” engraving, reinforcing the watch’s special connection to the studio. The price is 1,419,000 yen, which is approximately $8,950.
The Grand Seiko STGK039 takes a more compact and refined approach. It features a 30 mm stainless steel case, measuring 10.5 mm thick and 36.2 mm lug-to-lug. The watch is powered by the automatic Caliber 9S27, offering around 50 hours of power reserve and an accuracy rating of +8 to -3 seconds per day.
This model adds a touch of luxury with diamond hour markers placed at every hour except 12 o’clock. Like the SLGH039, it also features a sapphire caseback, though the Shizukuishi-exclusive engraving appears on the caseback rather than the movement bridge. The STGK039 is priced at 1,023,000 yen, or roughly $6,452.
Both new Grand Seiko watches offer 100 meters of water resistance, making them practical enough for daily wear while still carrying the elegance expected from the brand.
One standout detail of the SLGH039 is its Ever-Brilliant Steel case. Grand Seiko rates this material above 40 on the pitting resistance scale, compared with around 25 for standard stainless steel and about 35 for 904L steel. While the material is not necessarily more scratch-resistant, it offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it well-suited for long-term durability.
With their ivory tree-ring dials, Japan-only availability, and direct connection to Grand Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking home in Iwate, the SLGH039 and STGK039 are likely to attract serious collectors. They are not limited editions in the traditional sense, but the requirement to visit Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi gives them a level of exclusivity that many enthusiasts will find even more compelling.
