Govee has unveiled its latest smart lighting release, the Govee Outdoor Chromatic String Lights, built to bring dramatically more color control to patios, backyards, balconies, and outdoor entertaining spaces. The standout upgrade is what Govee calls the industry’s first Single-Light Rainbow System: instead of forcing each bulb to display only one static color at a time, these outdoor string lights can produce multi-color gradients and animated effects inside a single bulb.
That’s made possible through a new lighting architecture that packs 55 RGB LEDs into each bulb and pairs them with independent Uni-IC control. In practical terms, each bulb becomes its own mini light show, capable of layered color transitions and fluid animations that go far beyond traditional outdoor café-style string lights. Whether you’re aiming for subtle blended ambiance or energetic party lighting, the system is designed to create richer, more dynamic visuals across your entire setup.
Govee also leans into design details that help those effects look cleaner and more vibrant outdoors. A dual-layer shell structure is engineered to add depth and visual balance, while high-transmittance materials help maintain clarity and color richness. The end result is a “single-bulb rainbow” look that’s intended to be both technically advanced and striking from a distance.

They feature IP67-rated protection, positioned as the highest waterproof standard in the outdoor bulb string light category. Govee says the build is intended to handle heavy rain and moisture reliably, with an expected lifespan of more than 10 years under typical outdoor conditions.

These outdoor chromatic string lights support per-bulb DIY lighting design, letting you tailor effects on each individual bulb rather than settling for uniform patterns. You can create up to three layered cycling effects per bulb to produce more distinctive light-and-shadow transitions. A proprietary group encoding algorithm helps keep per-bulb control precise across the full string, opening the door to more complex patterns and personalized scenes for holidays, events, or everyday ambiance.
They’re also designed to be useful beyond decorative color. When you want practical illumination, the lights can switch to high-brightness white lighting, delivering up to 240 lumens per bulb—handy for outdoor dining, hosting, or brightening a seating area without changing fixtures.
As part of Govee’s smart lighting ecosystem, these string lights can be controlled through the Govee Home App, via voice commands using Amazon Alexa or Google Home, and they also support Matter compatibility for broader smart home integration.
