Google’s AI Mode Gets Smarter With App Linking and Interactive Controls

Google AI Mode now works with apps like Instacart, Canva, and YouTube, making it easier for users to plan, shop, design, and organize content directly from Google’s conversational search experience.

The latest update marks a major step in Google’s effort to turn AI Mode into more than a tool for answering questions. Instead of simply providing information, AI Mode can now help users take action across apps they already use. At launch, the new app connection feature supports Instacart, Canva, and YouTube, with more services expected to be added in the future.

With this rollout, Google is pushing AI Mode closer to becoming a practical everyday assistant. The feature is designed to help users complete tasks faster, whether they are preparing a meal, creating a design, or building a music playlist. It also strengthens Google’s position in the growing AI assistant market, where app integrations are becoming an important part of the user experience.

One example shared by Google involves planning a barbecue. A user can ask AI Mode to create a grocery list, then connect their Instacart account to add the needed ingredients directly to their cart. From there, they can finish the purchase through the Instacart app or website, cutting down the number of steps usually required to move from planning to checkout.

Canva integration is aimed at users who need quick design help. For instance, someone creating a flyer, invitation, or visual project can ask AI Mode for design ideas and have Canva display relevant templates. This could be especially useful for students, small business owners, event planners, and content creators who want inspiration without starting from scratch.

YouTube support also adds a more entertainment-focused use case. Users can ask AI Mode to help create a playlist for a party, workout, road trip, or other occasion, then save it directly to YouTube Music. This makes the process more natural, allowing people to describe the mood or theme they want instead of manually searching for songs one by one.

The feature is currently rolling out to users in the United States. Google says it is working with multiple partners and plans to bring more app integrations to AI Mode over time. As support expands, users may be able to complete a wider range of everyday tasks without leaving the AI-powered search interface.

This update builds on Google’s broader push to connect artificial intelligence with third-party services. Earlier this year, the company introduced similar app-connection features for the Gemini app, allowing users to complete tasks through services such as Canva, OpenTable, Spark, Instacart, and others.

Since AI Mode launched in early 2025, Google has continued to add new features aimed at making search more interactive and useful. One recent improvement allows AI Mode to help check whether a product is available at a nearby store. Another lets users browse the web side by side with AI Mode, making it easier to compare information, ask follow-up questions, and keep the context of a search intact.

Google has also introduced more personalized features for AI Mode. Earlier this year, the company added Personal Intelligence, which allows the AI experience to use information from services like Gmail and Google Photos to deliver more tailored responses when users choose to connect those sources.

By bringing app integrations into AI Mode, Google is making its conversational search tool more action-oriented. Rather than just helping users find information, AI Mode is starting to function like a digital assistant that can help plan activities, organize projects, shop for essentials, and manage media in a more seamless way.

For users, the biggest benefit is convenience. Tasks that once required switching between search, notes, shopping apps, design platforms, and media services can now begin inside a single AI conversation. As more apps are added, Google AI Mode could become a more central hub for everyday online activity.
