Google Podcasts, which made its initial debut on Android devices in June 2018, expanded its availability to iOS users two years later. The service, accessible via the web, allowed users across diverse operating systems including macOS, Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux the opportunity to enjoy podcast content. However, this service has reached its conclusion, with its functions being integrated into YouTube Music as of yesterday.
This integration of podcasts into YouTube Music brings an end to Google Podcasts, which despite its direct connection to Google Home upon launch, struggled to gain the same momentum as its competitors. The service’s discontinuation was not a surprise to those following its trajectory, as the announcement had been made back in September 2023.
Users who may not have been aware of this change need not worry about losing their content immediately. They have until July to access their Google Podcasts and can export any subscriptions to YouTube Music effortlessly through a dedicated export option in the settings menu of Google Podcasts.
In its endeavor to shape the podcast market, Google experimented with multiple services. Before Google Podcasts, there was Google Listen (2009-2012), and then Google Play Music Podcasts (2016-2020), which even overlapped with Google Podcasts for a couple of years. The focus now shifts to YouTube Podcasts, which currently exists as a dedicated section both on the web and within the YouTube Music app.
With a solid rating on Google Play and over 500 million downloads, Google Podcasts certainly had a user base. Nonetheless, there are other high-rated competitors in the market, including Castbox, Podbean, and Podcast Republic, that offer similar podcast services.
In a related deal, Amazon is offering a $40 discount on the Podcast Equipment Bundle by Squarock, featuring a complete set for podcast creation, which includes a Commander M100 mixer, two microphones, and several other accessories. With this coupon, the total price of the bundle drops from $189 to $149, an enticing deal for podcast enthusiasts looking to create their own content.
With podcasting becoming an increasingly popular medium for information and entertainment, services like YouTube Music are adapting to meet this demand, integrating podcasts into their platforms for a more streamlined user experience. As the digital landscape evolves, so too does the way we consume and create podcast content.
