Google Pixel Watch Could Soon Unlock Automatically With Your Phone
Google may be preparing a convenient new feature for the Pixel Watch that could make daily use much smoother. According to clues found in the code of Google’s Connected Phone & Watch app, future Pixel Watch models may be able to unlock automatically when the paired Pixel phone is unlocked.
At the moment, the Pixel Watch can already help unlock a Pixel smartphone, letting users bypass a password or fingerprint scan in certain situations. The upcoming feature would reverse that idea: instead of the watch unlocking the phone, the phone would unlock the watch.
This could be a major quality-of-life upgrade for Pixel Watch owners. Smartwatches typically require a PIN after they are removed from the wrist, which is useful for security but can become annoying in everyday use. Since the Pixel Watch usually needs to be charged frequently, many users take it off at least once a day. Each time it goes back on the wrist, the PIN must be entered again.
With this rumored feature, that extra step may no longer be necessary. Once enabled, the Pixel Watch could unlock automatically whenever the connected Pixel phone is unlocked using a passcode, fingerprint sensor, or other approved method. That means users would be able to put the watch back on and continue using it without manually typing in a PIN every time.
The feature is expected to require manual setup for security reasons. Based on the app code, users would likely need to enter their Pixel Watch PIN during activation to confirm ownership of the device. After that, the watch would be able to trust the paired phone as an unlock method.
This type of phone-to-watch unlocking is already known from Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem, where an unlocked iPhone can also unlock the paired watch. If Google brings a similar experience to the Pixel Watch, it would help make the device feel more seamless and polished.
Because the feature appears inside a Pixel-specific app, it may be limited to Pixel phones rather than being available to all Android devices. That means users with non-Pixel Android smartphones may not receive the same functionality, at least not at launch.
Google has not officially announced when the feature will arrive. It is also unclear which Pixel Watch models and Pixel smartphones will support it. However, the discovery suggests that Google is actively working on improving the connection between Pixel phones and Pixel Watch devices.
If released, automatic Pixel Watch unlocking could become one of the most useful everyday additions to Google’s wearable lineup. It may not be a flashy upgrade, but it directly addresses a common frustration and could make the Pixel Watch faster, easier, and more pleasant to use.
