Gmail Unveils a Personalized AI Inbox as Google Expands AI Overviews in Search and Beyond

Google is giving Gmail a major AI upgrade, starting with a new AI Inbox experience built to cut through clutter and surface what matters most. Alongside it, the company is introducing AI-powered search overviews inside Gmail and a built-in “Proofread” tool that works a lot like Grammarly. On top of that, several Gmail AI features that used to be reserved for paying customers are now expanding to everyone.

At the center of the update is a new AI Inbox tab designed to act like a personalized command center for your email. Instead of dropping you into a long list of messages, it presents a clearer snapshot of what needs your attention right now and what’s changed since you last checked.

This AI Inbox view is split into two main areas: “Suggested to-dos” and “Topics to catch up on.”

In “Suggested to-dos,” Gmail highlights your highest-priority emails and summarizes the action you likely need to take. Think practical nudges like a bill due tomorrow, or a reminder that you need to confirm your mailing address with a doctor’s office so they can ship a prescription refill. The aim is to turn buried emails into quick, actionable next steps without forcing you to open message after message.

“Topics to catch up on” is focused on status updates and ongoing threads you might not want to dig around for. You might see summaries like a return being processed, an order delivered, or a financial document now available. These updates are grouped into categories such as “Finances” and “Purchases,” making it easier to scan what changed across the parts of life that typically generate the most inbox noise.

Google says the traditional inbox isn’t going anywhere. This is simply an optional view you can toggle on or off when you want a more guided, organized overview of your email. The AI Inbox is rolling out first to trusted testers, with broader availability expected in the coming months.

Gmail is also getting AI Overviews in search, which changes how you find information in old emails. Instead of relying only on keywords and opening multiple messages to piece together details, you can ask a natural-language question and receive a direct answer pulled from your inbox.

For example, you could type something like: “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” Gmail can then generate an AI Overview at the top of results that surfaces the relevant name and key context from past emails. Google describes it as scanning your email to provide an AI-powered response, similar in concept to AI Overviews in web search, but in Gmail the response is based only on your own messages.

This AI search overview feature is rolling out to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers.

Another addition is “Proofread,” a built-in writing assistant meant to polish drafts before you hit send. It analyzes what you wrote and offers one-click improvements for clarity and structure, including suggestions for better word choice, more concise phrasing, switching to active voice, and breaking up overly complex sentences.

It also catches common mistakes and awkward wording. For instance, if you type “might inflict disturbance,” it may suggest “might disturb.” It can also flag incorrect word usage like “weather” when you meant “whether.” Proofread is also launching for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google’s broader message is that all of these AI features are optional. The company also says it does not use personal content to train its foundational models and that it processes personal data in a strictly isolated environment.

While some of the newest tools are initially limited to select users or paid tiers, Google is also widening access to several existing AI features in Gmail. “Help Me Write,” AI Overviews for threaded email conversations, and “Suggested Replies” are now rolling out to all users after previously being limited to subscribers.

“Help Me Write” lets you generate an email from a single prompt, which can be useful when you’re starting from scratch or trying to get the tone right quickly. AI Overviews for threaded emails summarize long back-and-forth conversations so you can catch up faster. Suggested Replies use the context of the conversation to offer responses that fit your tone and writing style, helping you reply faster without sounding generic.

Taken together, the update signals Google’s push to make Gmail feel less like a never-ending list of messages and more like an intelligent assistant that helps you stay on top of tasks, find answers faster, and send cleaner, more confident emails.
