Global electric vehicle sales are still climbing, but the pace is set to cool in 2026 as the wider auto market remains under strain. New estimates point to a year defined less by rapid, across-the-board expansion and more by a clear split in how the biggest EV regions move forward.
In 2025, the global automotive market managed only modest growth. Total vehicle sales reached about 91.4 million units, up just 1.7% year over year. Two major forces held the market back: ongoing tariff-related pressure and a high-interest-rate environment that made big-ticket purchases harder for many buyers to justify.
Even with that backdrop, EVs continued to outperform expectations in 2025. Full-year global EV sales climbed to roughly 20.985 million units, boosted by resilient demand in China and Europe. In other words, while the overall car market expanded slowly, the EV segment stayed strong and continued to take share.
The outlook changes in 2026. Global auto demand is expected to edge up only slightly, while EV growth shifts into a slower phase. The projected annual growth rate for EV sales is 15.2% for the year, signaling a notable deceleration compared with the recent surge years many consumers and manufacturers have become used to.
A key reason for the slowdown is policy transition. As subsidies are reduced or phased out and regulatory frameworks evolve, the support system that helped accelerate EV adoption in many places is changing. That doesn’t mean EVs are losing relevance—far from it—but it does mean the market is entering a more mature stage where growth depends more on pricing, charging infrastructure, model competitiveness, financing conditions, and local regulations than on broad incentive programs.
What makes 2026 particularly interesting is that the three biggest EV markets—China, Europe, and the United States—are not moving in lockstep. Instead, their trajectories are diverging. That regional divergence is expected to be one of the defining themes of the year: slower global growth overall, but with very different regional dynamics shaping volumes, consumer demand, and manufacturer strategy.
The takeaway for 2026 is clear: EV sales will keep rising, but the era of uniform, breakneck expansion is giving way to a new landscape. Automakers and suppliers will likely need to plan for a market where performance varies sharply by region, and where policy adjustments and economic conditions play a bigger role in determining who grows fastest.
