Ryzen 7 9800X3D shatters the 7.3 GHz barrier in a new world-record overclock, courtesy of the X870 AORUS Tachyon and a seasoned pro behind the keyboard.
At a launch event in Shanghai, veteran overclocker Hicookie pushed AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D to an eye-watering 7313 MHz using liquid nitrogen cooling. That makes it the first 9800X3D to break past 7.3 GHz, edging out the previous high-water mark of around 7.2 GHz.
The feat is especially impressive given the chip’s pedigree. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is already a monster for gaming with second-gen 3D V-Cache, packing 8 cores and 16 threads, up to 5.2 GHz boost clocks, 96 MB of cache, and a 120W TDP. For the record-setting run, SMT was disabled, leaving 8 cores and 8 threads active. The CPU was fed 1.631V, paired with a 101.57 MHz base clock and a 72x multiplier. All of this ran on the X870 AORUS Tachyon, a purpose-built enthusiast board designed for extreme overclocking, complete with a dual-DIMM DDR5 layout optimized for high-speed memory stability.
To validate stability at high clocks, Hicookie also ran Cinebench 2024. In single-core, the 9800X3D scored 1733 points at a still-massive 6648.8 MHz—below the peak frequency but enough to set the highest single-core overclocked score recorded for this CPU so far.
For context, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with PBO enabled typically lands around 1339 points in the same test. That’s a roughly 29.5% performance bump from an approximately 25.5% increase in clock speed, a strong scaling result that highlights how well the architecture and 3D V-Cache respond to extreme frequency.
Beyond the headline-grabbing numbers, this milestone underscores two things: the overclocking prowess of the X870 AORUS Tachyon platform and the headroom still lurking in AMD’s latest X3D part when pushed with exotic cooling. With new AM5 refreshes on the horizon, expect overclockers to keep chasing even higher frequencies and more chart-topping benchmark scores.
As always, these speeds use liquid nitrogen and specialized tuning, not settings for day-to-day rigs. But for enthusiasts and performance hunters, the 7.31 GHz milestone is a thrilling glimpse of what the Ryzen 7 9800X3D can do at the bleeding edge.
