Awesome Maps Brings Map Viewing to More Affordable Garmin Smartwatches
Garmin smartwatch users who own more affordable models may soon have a better way to check maps directly from their wrist. A new app called Awesome Maps is expanding map display support to Garmin devices that do not include Garmin’s built-in mapping features, giving budget-conscious users access to a function usually found on more premium watches.
Garmin has long separated its smartwatch lineup by features. Higher-end models typically include onboard map storage and more advanced navigation tools, while cheaper devices often focus on fitness tracking, health metrics, GPS recording, and workout data. That means users who want detailed maps on the watch usually need to spend more on a premium Garmin model.
Awesome Maps helps close that gap, at least partially. The app adds map viewing to compatible Garmin smartwatches and can be used during outdoor activities or as a data field while exercising. For runners, hikers, cyclists, and walkers, this could make it easier to get a quick sense of surroundings without pulling out a phone.
However, this is not the same as Garmin’s native mapping experience. Instead of storing full maps on the watch, Awesome Maps loads small map sections when needed. Because of this, the app requires an active data connection to display map areas. This makes it useful for quick map checks, but less ideal for remote adventures where mobile connectivity may be limited or unavailable.
The app supports several map styles, including satellite imagery and Swisstopo maps. Users can zoom in and out, making it feel somewhat like checking a traditional paper map on the wrist. Still, Awesome Maps is mainly designed for viewing maps rather than full turn-by-turn navigation.
One important limitation is the lack of dynamic route tracking. This means the app does not provide the same guided navigation experience available on Garmin’s more expensive watches with built-in maps. Users looking for advanced routing, offline navigation, and deep integration with Garmin’s native navigation tools may still need a higher-end device.
Even with these restrictions, Awesome Maps could be a welcome upgrade for owners of more affordable Garmin smartwatches. Competing budget wearables have already started offering map display at lower prices, so this app gives Garmin users another option without immediately upgrading to a premium model.
Awesome Maps is available in a limited free version. Users who want full access can choose a paid plan, with pricing starting at £3.49 or £4.99 for three months. An annual subscription is also available and lowers the monthly cost.
For Garmin users who mainly want a simple way to view maps during workouts or outdoor activities, Awesome Maps may be a practical and affordable solution. It does not replace full Garmin navigation, but it brings a useful map display feature to watches that previously lacked it.
