Garmin’s Budget Forerunner Gets a Major Feature-Packed Upgrade

Garmin Forerunner 70 Gets Public Beta 19.15 With New Features, Swim Tracking Improvements, and Key Bug Fixes

Garmin has started a fresh software development cycle for the Forerunner 70, bringing a sizeable new public beta update to its most affordable Forerunner smartwatch. The Forerunner 70, which launched in May alongside the Forerunner 170, is now receiving Public Beta Version 19.15 with a wide range of improvements aimed at making the watch more reliable, more accurate, and easier to use during daily workouts.

This update follows Garmin’s previous v18 software cycle, which ended with Beta 18.29 in early September. That build was later promoted to the stable channel as Software Version 18.29 before being replaced by Software Version 18.32, an update focused mainly on fixing known issues. Now, with Public Beta 19.15, Garmin is moving beyond maintenance and adding new refinements to the Forerunner 70 experience.

According to the changelog, Public Beta Version 19.15 introduces 17 total changes. These include three new feature-related additions, ten bug fixes, and four general improvements. For users who rely on the Forerunner 70 for fitness tracking, swimming, workouts, alerts, and connected accessories, this update could be one of the more useful beta releases so far.

One of the notable additions is improved support for Garmin’s HRM 200 and HRM 600 heart rate monitors. The watch now provides instructions for entering pairing mode, which should make connecting compatible heart rate accessories more straightforward. This is especially helpful for runners and athletes who use chest straps or external sensors for more accurate heart rate data during training.

Garmin has also changed Auto Lap prompts during workouts. Instead of simply announcing a lap, the Forerunner 70 can now announce lap numbers, making it easier to track progress without needing to look at the watch mid-session. This small change could be particularly useful for structured running workouts, interval sessions, and race preparation.

Another adjustment affects the Pulse Ox app. With this beta release, the app will only block vibrations while it is actively taking a reading. That should make the feature feel less intrusive while still preventing interruptions during blood oxygen measurements.

Swim tracking also receives attention in Public Beta 19.15. Garmin says the update improves swim length accuracy and swim stroke type detection. For swimmers using the Forerunner 70 in the pool, this could lead to more dependable workout summaries and better training data after each session.

The update also includes several fixes for everyday usability problems. Garmin has addressed an issue with the activity pause menu, making sure the Resume option can be reached properly when navigating through the list. Silent mode has also been improved, with a fix for a bug that could cause alert volume to unmute itself after silent mode was enabled.

Other fixes target connected features and activity tools. Garmin has resolved an issue that prevented users from removing the Radar Camera Controls data screen. The update also fixes a problem where Breathwork Live Activity instructions could appear blank, improving the experience for users who rely on guided breathing sessions.

Battery performance is another area covered in this release. Garmin says it has fixed a battery drain issue that could occur while using Alipay. While this may only affect users in supported regions, it is an important fix for anyone who noticed unusual power consumption while using payment-related features.

Bluetooth headset behavior has also been improved. Public Beta 19.15 addresses inconsistent headset volume control and volume synchronization, which should make audio feedback and connected listening more predictable during workouts.

Garmin has also fixed an issue where lists could become stuck when entering Pinyin, as well as a bug that caused Find My Device alerts to be missing during repeated searches. Notifications during intense workouts have been adjusted too. The watch will now delay notifications during high-intensity workout intervals, helping athletes stay focused during demanding training segments.

For users who track stocks on the watch, Garmin has fixed an issue where a stock would not immediately move up or down in the list when being rearranged. Weather data has also been improved, with the watch now continuing to display available weather information during outages instead of failing more abruptly.

Activity management has been refined as well. Garmin has updated activity discard behavior for activities longer than 30 seconds, which may help prevent accidental loss of workout data. Move alerts have also been updated with manual snooze options and automatic suppression conditions, giving users more control over when they receive reminders to move.

In short, Garmin Forerunner 70 Public Beta 19.15 is a meaningful update that improves workout guidance, accessory pairing, swim tracking, notifications, Bluetooth audio, battery behavior, and overall watch reliability. While it is still a beta release, the number of practical fixes and refinements makes it an important update for Forerunner 70 owners who want early access to Garmin’s latest improvements.
