Garmin Update Makes Indoor Runs More Accurate for Smartwatch Users

Garmin Instinct 3 Update 14.17 Improves Treadmill Calibration Accuracy

Garmin has started rolling out a new stable software update for the Instinct 3 smartwatch, bringing the device to firmware version 14.17. While this is not a major feature-packed release, it does address an important issue for users who regularly train indoors.

The latest Garmin Instinct 3 firmware update focuses on fixing a treadmill calibration problem. According to the release notes, the previous software could prevent calibration from properly improving the match between the distance shown on the watch and the actual distance covered during treadmill workouts.

This means runners who use the Instinct 3 for indoor training should see more reliable distance tracking after installing firmware 14.17, especially when manually calibrating treadmill runs.

The update is currently being distributed in phases, so not every Instinct 3 owner will receive it immediately. Garmin has made the update available to roughly 20 percent of eligible devices at this stage, with wider availability expected as the rollout continues. If the firmware has not appeared on your watch yet, it should arrive automatically over time.

Unlike larger smartwatch updates, firmware version 14.17 does not add new functions, design changes, or performance features. Its purpose is strictly to correct the treadmill calibration bug found in the earlier 14.15 release.

Treadmill calibration is especially useful because GPS is not available during indoor runs. When running outside, the Garmin Instinct 3 can use satellite positioning to calculate distance more accurately. Indoors, however, the watch must estimate movement using sensors, step patterns, cadence, and arm motion.

That estimate can sometimes differ from the distance displayed on the treadmill. Calibration allows users to adjust the watch’s recorded distance after a treadmill session, helping the device learn and improve future indoor run tracking.

This fix may be particularly helpful for users training on older treadmills or gym machines that do not support modern fitness platform syncing. While newer treadmills may offer direct data sharing with health and fitness services, many machines still require the smartwatch to estimate distance independently.

For Garmin Instinct 3 owners who regularly run indoors, firmware 14.17 is a small but practical update. It may not introduce flashy new features, but improved treadmill calibration can make workout records more accurate and useful over time.
