Garmin Unveils Connect IQ 8 Beta: Exciting Watch Face and Notification Enhancements

Garmin has unveiled its latest innovation, the Connect IQ System 8, designed to streamline app development for smartwatch enthusiasts. Currently in beta, this new system promises enhanced tools and features aimed at simplifying the creation and optimization of apps for Garmin’s range of wearables.

This update, emerging approximately a year after the previous Connect IQ System 7, introduces several key enhancements for developers. Notably, a new Visual Studio Code extension has been implemented, offering real-time error reports, autocompletion of functions, and a quick reference guide for functions and variables. These tools are crafted to speed up development and reduce potential errors, making the coding process more efficient. Moreover, an additional 16 megabytes of code space has been allocated for smartwatches compatible with System 8, providing developers with more room to expand their applications.

A particularly exciting feature is the new on-device watch face editor, allowing developers to create up to four unique versions of a Connect IQ watch face. This editor is exclusive to the latest models, including the Fenix 8’s 51mm Solar variant, among others. Furthermore, enhancements have been made to the notifications module, enabling triggered actions even while apps run in the background—offering a more seamless user experience.

To dive into these new possibilities, Garmin app developers can access the Connect IQ System 8 beta SDK and the system8preview device through the Connect IQ SDK manager. The Monkey C extension for Visual Studio Code, essential for developers using this environment, is available for separate download.

For those eager to be on the cutting edge, Garmin offers the chance to join the Beta Program via Garmin Connect, facilitating direct involvement in testing and refining these advancements.
