Garmin has started rolling out a new stable software update for the Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970, bringing a focused fix aimed at improving the display experience on both smartwatches.
The latest release, Software Version 17.39, arrives shortly after the previous stable update, Version 17.38, which included security-related improvements. While Garmin did not share many details about those earlier changes, this newer update is more specific: it targets a bug that could lead to unexpected display behavior.
According to Garmin, the issue may have caused inconsistent gesture responses, meaning some users may have noticed the screen not reacting as expected when raising the wrist or using gesture-based display controls. With Version 17.39, the company appears to be tightening up the overall responsiveness and reliability of the watch display.
The update is available for both the Garmin Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970. Users can wait for the automatic over-the-air rollout, which appears to be underway, or check for the update manually directly from the watch.
To install it manually, open the main menu on the smartwatch, go to System, then Software Update, and select Check for Updates. If the update has reached your device, it should begin downloading from there.
Although Garmin has been testing newer v18.xx beta software, this stable release remains part of the v17.xx branch. That means users should not expect major new features or a large redesign with this update. Instead, Software Version 17.39 is a maintenance release focused on stability and fixing display-related problems.
Garmin has also moved several other recent smartwatch models to Software Version 17.39, including the Venu 4, Venu X1, and Vivoactive 6. This suggests the display behavior fix may apply across multiple devices in Garmin’s current wearable lineup.
For Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970 owners, this update is worth installing, especially if you have experienced irregular screen wake behavior or unreliable gesture controls. While it may be a small update, smoother display performance can make a noticeable difference during workouts, daily tracking, and general smartwatch use.
