Garmin Rolls Out Big Smartwatch Update Packed With New Features and Fixes

Garmin is rolling out a new stable software update for several of its rugged smartwatch models, bringing useful fixes, performance improvements, and security enhancements to the Instinct lineup.

The latest release, System Software 15.18, is now available for the Garmin Instinct 3, Instinct E, and Instinct Crossover AMOLED. This update follows a completed beta testing phase and is now being distributed through Garmin’s stable software channel.

According to Garmin, the update has already reached around half of eligible Instinct 3 series smartwatches running stable software. If the update has not appeared on your device yet, you do not necessarily need to wait for the automatic rollout. Users can manually check for the update directly on the watch by opening the main menu, going to System, selecting Software Update, and then choosing Check for Updates.

System Software 15.18 replaces the previous stable version, System Software 14.17, which was released roughly a month earlier. While this is not a visual overhaul, it is still an important update for everyday usability, especially for users who rely on their Garmin smartwatch for hiking, strength training, interval workouts, and outdoor tracking.

One of the key improvements in this release is better gear suggestions for Hike activities. This should make the watch more helpful during outdoor adventures by offering more relevant recommendations based on the selected activity. For hikers and outdoor fitness users, this small change could make activity tracking feel more polished and practical.

Garmin has also addressed a possible lag issue in the glances list. Since glances are used frequently to quickly view health stats, notifications, weather, activity data, and other information, smoother performance should improve the overall user experience.

Strength training users will benefit from a fix related to incorrect weight values when editing a set. Previously, some users may have seen the wrong weight displayed during workout adjustments, which could be frustrating for those carefully tracking progressive overload or detailed gym sessions.

The update also fixes an issue where pace could drop out during interval workouts. This is an important correction for runners and athletes who depend on accurate pacing data during structured training sessions.

DogTrack users are also getting a fix. Garmin says the dog pointer direction in the DogTrack glance has been corrected, which should improve reliability for users who pair compatible dog tracking equipment with their watch.

Another fix resolves a problem where a Connect IQ data field could be obscured. Garmin has also corrected an issue where watch face data fields could appear blank in certain languages, improving usability for international users.

Finally, System Software 15.18 includes general security improvements. Garmin has not detailed the specific security changes, but keeping smartwatch software up to date is always recommended to ensure better stability, privacy, and device protection.
