Garmin Previews Massive Stable Update for Premium Smartwatches, Packed with New Features and Enhancements

Garmin is gearing up to roll out a major stable software update for its latest high-end watches, including the Fenix 8, Fenix 8 Pro, Enduro 3, Fenix E, and Tactix 8. Set to be the first big release since mid-August, this 20.xx firmware consolidates more than a month of beta testing and packs close to 100 refinements, with roughly 89 improvements over the current 17.30 build. The Fenix 8 Pro receives nearly two dozen tweaks on its own, and it will now follow the same 20.xx software cycle as the standard Fenix 8.

The update is expected to land very soon. Beta Version 20.19 has already been pushed to eligible beta devices, including models with Aviation, Dive, and ECG features, and it’s likely to transition to a stable release within days. Keep an eye out for System Software 20.19 or a similar build number.

Highlights of what’s new and improved
– LTE and connectivity upgrades on Fenix 8 Pro: a power-saving LTE Standby prompt during activities, an LTE signal strength data field, smoother call and message handling, and cleaner status indicators.
– Smarter messaging: an image viewer for photos received via Messenger for Wearables (with pan and zoom), quicker access to voice messages, and full emoji reactions.
– Training and health additions: a Cycling VO2 Max watch face complication, Health Status, and Inline Skating compatibility for custom workouts.
– Faster everyday use: automatic touch lock/unlock on the Strength Reps screen, hotkey support for the Calculator, improved watch face selection scrolling, and direct touch access to the keyboard layout menu.
– Navigation refinements: the Navigation Preview now shows total distance remaining, and Multisport activities let you long-press the Lap key to switch sports on the fly.
– Broader file support: added compatibility for GPI files.

Key fixes and polish you’ll notice
– Stability and performance: fewer crashes, reduced lag when starting activities or swiping through the Morning Report, and smoother glance performance.
– Activity accuracy and controls: better altitude behavior at high elevations, corrected VO2 Max in Running Performance, properly locking buttons during Indoor Climb splits, and reliable dismissal of training alerts.
– Mapping and routing: fixes for Outdoor Maps Plus black screens and layers, course creation issues that led to straight-line routes, POI search labeling, and ClimbPro/course points after resuming navigation.
– Notifications and audio: more reliable smart notifications on Android, voice alert frequency fixes, voice not continuing after volume changes, and headphone connection stability.
– Swim and ECG: no more storm alerts during swim sessions, corrected screen behavior during ECG recordings, and proper LTE behavior when a paired phone regains internet.
– Interface and widgets: watch face battery and weather icon corrections, accurate translations for date fields, proper background colors on MIP screens, and wallet PIN timeout enforcement.
– Device-specific fixes: Tactix WX Radar shortcut now works; Enduro 2 battery icon display corrected.
– Messenger on Fenix 8 Pro: more reliable call state, voice message timing, quick controls, and reduced pop-ups over SOS threads.

When to expect the update
– With Beta Version 20.19 already in broad testing, the stable rollout for System Software 20.xx is imminent and could arrive before the week is out for supported models.

What this means for you
– If you’re using a Fenix 8 or Fenix 8 Pro, this release aligns both models on the same 20.xx track and brings a meaningful mix of new features, performance boosts, and quality-of-life fixes. Owners of Enduro 3, Fenix E, and Tactix 8 should also see noticeable reliability and usability improvements across training, navigation, and everyday interactions.
