Garmin Introduces Comprehensive Update for Fenix 7 Smartwatch Series

Garmin has recently introduced a new comprehensive software update for its Fenix 7 series, with the release extending to other models such as the Enduro 2, Epix 2, Marq 2, and Quatix 7. This update, labeled Software Version 17.20, is building upon the previous update, Software Version 16.22. It features a substantial number of enhancements, ranging from added features to numerous bug fixes designed to refine the user experience for Garmin smartwatch enthusiasts.

This stable software update comes after its prior release, which saw close to 40 updates being applied to the aforementioned smartwatch models, covering both standard and Pro variants. Since that significant release, there have been various beta versions in testing, culminating in this latest stable version, System Software 17.20, which was initially beta tested without any clear indication that it would be the final candidate for stable release. Nonetheless, Garmin proceeded to finalize and distribute the new software, offering 28 improvements over the last version.

Among the updates, users can now find six new features that aim to boost the smartwatches’ functionality and convenience. A notable addition is the Garmin Messenger app, aiming to enhance communication capabilities directly from the wrist. The update also prioritizes health-tracking accuracy with the introduction of heart rate dynamic source switching, which allows the smartwatch to select the optimal heart rate data source between the watch or a chest HRM during running activities. Moreover, the inclusion of an Indoor Walk activity, Recovery Advisor in Morning Report and Glances, as well as Self Evaluation to additional activity types reflects Garmin’s focus on fitness and wellness features.

The update is not just about new features; it also contains 17 bug fixes addressing issues such as incorrect battery estimates prior to Expedition activities and resolution of software errors that affected heart rate charts on certain watch face displays. In response to the users’ feedback, Garmin has also fixed problems related to the endurance of Outdoor Maps+, WiFi requirements for certain functionalities, and unexpected deletion of map layers, among others.

Moreover, the latest software introduces minor yet essential improvements, such as an enhanced touch keyboard with access to additional characters, improved Outdoor Maps+ performance, a rename of the ‘Climb’ sport mode to ‘Mountaineering,’ and updated translations for a more global user base.

For Garmin smartwatch owners, this update promises a more robust and feature-rich experience. It’s encouraging to see Garmin’s commitment to refining its devices with regular updates that not only expand the abilities of their smartwatches but also address user feedback for more reliable performance. Users of the Fenix 7 series and related models can look forward to a smoother and more capable device, ensuring that their smartwatch remains at the cutting edge of wearable technology.

Garmin users can obtain this new update and enjoy the potential of these enhancements and fixes. Keeping smartwatches updated ensures optimal performance and access to the latest features that can support active lifestyles and maintain connectivity on the go.
