Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 could get a smarter Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip with stronger AI performance
Samsung may be preparing a meaningful performance upgrade for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, and it could come from a specially tuned version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. According to the latest rumor, the foldable flagship may use a better-binned variant of the chipset that focuses less on raw clock speed increases and more on improved AI processing, multitasking, and power efficiency.
The Galaxy S26 lineup is already expected to benefit from a customized version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, reportedly featuring higher CPU and GPU clock speeds than the standard chip. However, Samsung may want its next-generation foldable phones to feel more distinct. To achieve that, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could receive a more refined version of the same processor, designed to deliver better real-world performance rather than just higher benchmark numbers.
The rumored Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is said to keep the same CPU and GPU clock speeds as the Galaxy S26 version. That means the performance cores may still run at up to 4.74GHz, while the Adreno 840 GPU could remain clocked at 1.30GHz. On paper, that may not sound like a major upgrade. But the important change could be in the NPU, or Neural Processing Unit.
The NPU is responsible for handling AI-based tasks directly on the device.
