The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE (Fan Edition) emerges as a considerate option for those seeking a taste of Samsung’s latest technology without stretching their budget for the flagship S23. While it mirrors many aspects of its more premium sibling, the S23 FE makes certain concessions to keep costs down, most notably in the camera department.
The Galaxy S23 FE offers a front camera with a lower resolution when compared to the Galaxy S23. Operating with an aperture of f/2.4 and lacking autofocus, the front camera is somewhat less capable – especially in low light – resulting in visible image noise. Despite these limitations, it performs adequately in well-lit conditions, making it suitable for casual photography and social media uploads. It also retains the ability to capture video at a crisp Ultra HD resolution at 60 frames per second (FPS).
The device’s main camera assembly draws close parallels to the higher-end models, featuring a 50-megapixel primary sensor equipped with optical image stabilization (OIS). Complementing this is a 12-megapixel ultrawide angle lens and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens capable of 3x optical zoom. However, users should note the absence of a dedicated macro function across the lens array.
When it comes to performance, the main camera of the S23 FE holds its ground with quality results, although it reveals a marginally reduced dynamic range, most evident in panoramic shots. In dim conditions, the FE model keeps pace with the regular S23, maintaining similar output levels. The zoom functionality, while competent, does reveal limitations due to the telephoto lens’s lower resolution, with digital zoom extending up to 30x.
Samsung doesn’t skimp on the photography experience provided by the camera software. Users have access to a full suite of settings, including two Pro modes and a RAW capture option to tweak and enhance their images. However, those eager to delve into specialized photography, such as astro photography, will find the S23 FE’s software offerings fall short. The Expert RAW app from the Galaxy Store, while available for other models, is sadly not supported on the S23 FE.
When recording videos, the S23 FE performs admirably. The main camera supports numerous resolutions and frame rates, such as 8K at 24 FPS, Ultra HD at 60 FPS, Full HD at 60 FPS, and HD at 30 FPS. Pro mode unlocks further possibilities with additional frame rates like Full HD at 120 FPS and allows for more intricate settings adjustments, including the option to shoot in a cinema-style 21:9 format.
Evidently, the Galaxy S23 FE targets fans seeking flagship features at a more accessible price point. With its comprehensive camera capabilities, despite some trade-offs, the S23 FE is a strong contender in the competitive mid-range smartphone market.
