Recent developments suggest Samsung is venturing into the Windows 11 on ARM laptop market with its latest offering, the Galaxy Book 4 Edge. Evidence of this surfaced when the device was spotted in the Geekbench online benchmarking tool. On inspection, the Galaxy Book 4 Edge appears to run Windows 11 Home (64-bit) with a Snapdragon X Elite CPU at its core, supported by 16GB of RAM.
The appearance of the Snapdragon X Elite chip in the benchmarking database indicates that Qualcomm may have found a partner in Samsung for rolling out its new processor. This benchmark revelation aligns with Qualcomm’s intentions to seek collaboration in promoting their Snapdragon X Elite chip. However, the same data suggests that Samsung isn’t yet positioned to introduce its own Exynos ARM-based chip for laptops, focusing instead on refining its Exynos technology for smartphones.
Performance Insights Show Potential for Windows on ARM
The synthetic Geekbench scores portray a promising outlook for the Galaxy Book 4 Edge’s capabilities. The laptop achieved an impressive single-core score of 2,706 points and a multi-core score of 12,646 points in version 6.2.2 of Geekbench.
When comparing these scores with Apple’s range of M1, M2, and M3 chips, it’s indicated that the Snapdragon X Elite outstrips the performance of the M1 and M2 chips but falls slightly behind the advanced M3. The comparison, however, excludes Apple’s M Pro chips. Despite these benchmarks, one must consider the different operating systems these chips are optimized for – with M chips designed for MacOS and Snapdragon X Elite meant for Windows 11 on ARM. Therefore, real-world performance might vary considering these optimizations.
Furthermore, the Snapdragon X Elite chip is rumoured to be the power source for other upcoming devices such as the Microsoft Surface Laptop 6 and the Surface Pro 10 tablet. This positions Samsung’s Galaxy Book 4 Edge to potentially rival Microsoft’s Surface offerings. The question of whether the Galaxy Book 4 Edge will be a standard notebook, a 2-in-1 with a foldable hinge, or a versatile tablet PC with a detachable keyboard, remains unanswered at this stage.
As the tech community anticipates these developments, the Galaxy Book 4 Edge seems poised to make its mark in the growing landscape of ARM-based laptops, aiming to offer a powerful alternative within the Windows ecosystem.
