ChatGPT Usage Costs Could See Significant Increase in Coming Years
According to internal documents obtained by The New York Times, OpenAI may soon raise the price of its individual ChatGPT subscriptions from $20 to $22 per month by the end of this year. Looking further ahead, the company anticipates a more substantial price jump, predicting that ChatGPT Plus will cost $44 per month by 2029.
This strategic decision is largely driven by the need to appease investors who are urging OpenAI to mitigate its financial losses. Despite generating a monthly revenue of $300 million as of August, OpenAI is still expected to incur a staggering loss of $5 billion this year. The high costs associated with staffing, office expenses, and maintaining AI training infrastructure are substantial contributors to this financial strain. Remarkably, ChatGPT itself reportedly costs OpenAI about $700,000 daily.
However, this potential price increase might not sit well with users. Although ChatGPT currently has an impressive base of approximately 10 million paying subscribers, surveys indicate that many users already find the existing monthly fee of $20 to be on the high side.
