Fujifilm Rumored to Be Developing a 180MP Medium-Format Powerhouse

Fujifilm could be preparing a major jump in medium format resolution. New chatter from a well-known rumor source suggests the company is developing a GFX-series camera built around a staggering 180MP medium format sensor—potentially setting a new benchmark for the brand’s high-resolution lineup.

Right now, photographers who want a relatively “accessible” medium format system—typically priced under about €8,000—are largely capped at 102 megapixels. Popular options in this range include cameras like the Fujifilm GFX100S II and similarly specced rivals that also top out at 102MP. If the 180MP rumor is accurate, Fujifilm would be aiming far beyond that ceiling, targeting creators who want extreme detail for commercial work, fine art prints, high-end product photography, and heavy cropping workflows.

What makes the rumored 180MP GFX especially interesting is how it would compare to ultra-premium medium format gear that currently dominates the resolution discussion. A well-known competitor offers a 150MP sensor but sits in an entirely different price bracket—around €57,000. Part of that cost difference comes down to sensor size: that 150MP camera uses a significantly larger medium format sensor, while Fujifilm’s GFX system uses a smaller medium format format measuring 43.8 × 32.9 mm. Even so, packing 180 million pixels into the GFX sensor format could deliver incredibly high detail while keeping the overall system cost far below the most expensive professional solutions.

Here’s the key context behind the numbers. Current 102MP medium format cameras from Fujifilm and another major brand share the same sensor dimensions (43.8 × 32.9 mm), with a sensor area of roughly 1,441 mm². By comparison, the 150MP option mentioned earlier uses a 53.4 × 40.1 mm sensor with an area of about 2,141 mm²—roughly 49% larger. That larger surface area can contribute to better light gathering and different imaging characteristics, but it also helps explain why the pricing is in a different universe.

Because multiple camera makers rely on the same medium format sensor size at 43.8 × 32.9 mm, there’s also speculation that other brands using that format could eventually adopt a similar 180MP sensor in future models. However, the current rumor indicates this sensor-equipped camera may still be some time away. At the moment, there’s no confirmed launch window and no reliable details on additional specifications such as autofocus performance, burst rates, video features, image stabilization, or whether the camera will prioritize studio use, landscape work, or an all-round flagship approach.

For now, the main takeaway is simple: if Fujifilm truly brings a 180MP medium format GFX camera to market, it could reshape expectations for high-resolution photography—offering a level of detail that challenges far more expensive systems while staying within the more attainable GFX ecosystem.
