Intel has unveiled its ambitious next-generation automotive system-on-chips (SoCs) at the Shanghai Auto Show, setting the stage for a promising future in automotive technology. Intel’s upcoming SoCs, known as Frisco Lake and Grizzly Lake, incorporate cutting-edge Panther Lake and Nova Lake architectures, indicating significant enhancements in AI capabilities and overall performance.
The spotlight is on the 2nd Generation SDV SoC, Frisco Lake, which is poised to make waves in the automotive industry. Drawing from the Panther Lake architecture, Frisco Lake promises to deliver a remarkable tenfold increase in AI performance, alongside a 61% boost in efficiency compared to its predecessor. This leap is backed by the power of 3rd Gen Xe Graphics, referred to as Xe3 or Celestial, which brings a substantial upgrade over previous generations. Furthermore, the SoC is designed to support an array of advanced features including 12 camera channels and 280 audio channels, catering to the intricate demands of modern automotive systems.
Looking further ahead, Intel’s roadmap unveils the Grizzly Lake platform, which is set to elevate the automotive industry even further. Scheduled for a 2027 launch, Grizzly Lake will showcase Monument Peak processors based on Nova Lake IP, featuring an anticipated 32 E-Cores configured for sophisticated computational tasks. It’s expected to integrate an impressive Xe iGPU capable of delivering up to 7 TFLOPs of compute performance, alongside advanced support features like six display pipes, up to 12 cameras, AEC-Q100 Grade 2 certification, and ASIL B compliance.
With these upcoming innovations, Intel is rapidly advancing its automotive capabilities, aiming to secure a significant foothold in the evolving electric vehicle market. If the timelines remain on track, Grizzly Lake could roll out in early 2027, aligning with Intel’s strategy to stay ahead in the competitive automotive landscape, making it an exciting prospect for the industry and consumers alike.
