Spotify is rolling out a smarter way to fine-tune your listening. A new set of smart filters lets you sift through your library by activity, mood, or genre, making it easier to find exactly what fits the moment. These filters can surface playlists and, to a degree, audiobooks and podcasts, and they can even launch a fresh session with the AI DJ.
The update is arriving first for Premium subscribers on mobile phones and tablets in select markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa. The company expects the rollout to complete over the next few weeks.
At its core, this feature is about speed and personalization. Instead of scrolling through an ever-growing library, you can zero in on what you want—whether you’re in the mood for something upbeat, need background music to focus, or want a soundtrack for a workout. It’s another step toward reducing the friction between opening the app and hearing something that feels handpicked for you.
Smart filters are the latest in a recent wave of personalization updates. Earlier this year, Spotify introduced AI prompts that generate individualized playlists, expanded playlist management tools, and added the ability to design your own custom cover art. You can now talk directly to the AI DJ to steer your music selection and explore a refreshed take on Discover Weekly, the service’s signature personalized playlist.
Not everyone is thrilled with the pace of change. As the app experiments with social elements—messages, comments on podcasts, polls, Q&As, stories, and a more video-forward feed influenced by the addition of music videos and video podcasts—some listeners say the interface feels crowded. Longtime users have voiced concerns that constant additions and a heavier emphasis on algorithmic recommendations can be overwhelming, and a subset has left the platform as a result.
Even so, growth remains strong. In the last reported quarter, total users climbed 11% year over year to 696 million, while paid subscribers reached 276 million, up 12%. The numbers suggest that deeper personalization, even with a busier interface, is keeping many people engaged.
What this means for listeners is simple: more control over what you hear and faster access to content that matches your vibe. If you’re a Premium user in one of the supported countries, keep an eye on your library for the new filters. Try using them to find the right playlist for a specific activity, explore mood-based mixes, or kick off an AI DJ session tailored to how you’re feeling right now.
For creators and curators, smarter filters could also bring new life to playlists, podcasts, and audiobook collections that align with popular moods and activities, potentially improving discovery without requiring users to search or scroll.
As the rollout continues, expect Spotify to keep threading the needle between personalization power and interface simplicity. For now, smart filters add a welcome layer of intent to your listening—helping you go from open app to perfect queue in just a few taps.
