Final Fantasy XIV players may want to bundle up, because Square Enix has officially revealed the game’s next major expansion: Evercold. Set to bring a harsh new tone to the MMO, Evercold takes place in a world locked under an unrelenting frost. As the story unfolds, you and your party will be tasked with uncovering what caused the deep freeze and what’s really happening beneath the ice.
Alongside the new setting, Evercold is packed with the kind of additions fans expect from a full expansion. Square Enix says players can look forward to new cities to explore, distinctive new areas shaped by the frozen theme, fresh monsters to battle, and new allies to meet along the journey. There’s also a new raid series on the way, plus a brand-new ultimate raid designed for high-end players who want the toughest challenges Final Fantasy XIV has to offer.
Two new jobs are also coming with Evercold, although Square Enix hasn’t revealed their names yet. What has been confirmed is the role lineup: one of the new jobs will be a tank, and the other will be a physical ranged DPS. That mix should appeal to group-focused players looking to fill essential party roles, while also opening up new playstyles once the details are finally shared.
Progression is getting a boost as well. Evercold will raise the level cap from 100 to 110, giving players more room to grow their characters and expand their builds as new content rolls out.
One of the biggest gameplay shifts teased so far is a combat overhaul built around two modes: Reborn and Evolved. Reborn Mode is described as an updated version of the current combat system, with adjustments aimed at refining how things already work. Evolved Mode, on the other hand, is said to place a stronger emphasis on job identity, hinting at combat changes that could make each role feel more distinct and specialized than before.
In a surprise announcement, Square Enix also confirmed a collaboration with khara, Inc. that will bring EVANGELION into Final Fantasy XIV. The crossover will arrive as an alliance raid series titled EVANGELION – Ghosts of Desire, and it promises to incorporate elements inspired by the iconic mecha anime and its larger cultural impact. Details are still scarce for now, but the announcement alone is already fueling plenty of speculation about bosses, visuals, and storyline connections.
With a frozen new world, new jobs, higher levels, revamped combat options, and a major EVANGELION tie-in raid series, Evercold is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about Final Fantasy XIV expansions yet.
