Eternal Anima Revealed: Time-Travel JRPG From Final Fantasy Veterans Launches in 2027
Marvelous has officially announced Eternal Anima, a new time-travel JRPG set to launch worldwide on March 4, 2027. First teased in 2023 under the working title Project Life is RPG, the game made its full debut during the Nintendo Direct presentation on September 9, 2026.
Eternal Anima is already shaping up to be one of the most intriguing upcoming JRPG releases, thanks to its ambitious story, generation-spanning adventure, and a development team filled with role-playing game veterans. The project features director Katsuhisa Higuchi, story concept writer Keisuke Makino, and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, whose credits include major entries in the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts franchises.
The game will release simultaneously on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
A world drowned by history
Eternal Anima takes place in a mysterious world almost completely covered by ocean. More than a thousand years before the events of the game, four continents disappeared beneath the waves, leaving Urvis Ael as the last surviving kingdom.
In this isolated society, hope itself has become dangerous. Citizens are forbidden from dreaming of a better future, and anyone who does so can face the death penalty. The story follows Wade, a young man who begins to question this brutal law and soon finds himself marked as a fugitive.
Wade’s journey takes him far beyond his own time. To uncover the hidden truth behind his world’s collapse, he must travel across different eras, confront disasters before they happen, and attempt to save civilizations that history has already condemned.
Psychometry powers and inherited hero classes
One of Eternal Anima’s central gameplay features is psychometry, an ability that allows Wade to read memories stored inside ancient artifacts. These memories are more than simple story fragments; they also allow him to inherit the powers, skills, and classes of heroes from the past.
This system appears designed to blend narrative discovery with character progression. As players uncover the lost history of the world, they will also expand Wade’s combat options and customize his role in battle through the abilities of long-gone warriors.
Future Sight adds strategy to turn-based battles
Eternal Anima uses a turn-based combat system with a twist called Future Sight. This mechanic lets players see what enemies are planning before they act. Instead of simply reacting to attacks, players can prepare counters, delay enemy actions, or cancel dangerous moves entirely.
Future Sight could make battles feel more tactical than traditional turn-based encounters, encouraging players to think several steps ahead. By combining prediction, timing, and class-based abilities, Eternal Anima aims to deliver a strategic combat system built around changing fate before it unfolds.
Eternal Anima release date and editions
Eternal Anima will launch globally on March 4, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Physical Standard Editions have been confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The PS5 Standard Edition will be priced at $49.99, while the Switch 2 Standard Edition will cost $59.99 and include the full game on cartridge.
Limited Editions will also be available. The PS5 Limited Edition is priced at $79.99, while the Switch 2 Limited Edition will cost $89.99. Each Limited Edition includes the game, an art book, a two-disc soundtrack, and nine character art cards with a display stand.
With its ocean-covered world, forbidden future, time-travel storytelling, and strategic Future Sight combat, Eternal Anima is positioning itself as a major JRPG release for 2027. For fans of story-rich role-playing games, this could be one to watch closely.
