Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Massive 170GB Xbox Preload Demands Serious Storage Space

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Xbox Preload Hits 169 GB, Creating a Storage Headache for Players

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is almost ready to arrive on Xbox Series X|S, but players may need to clear a serious amount of space before launch day. The Xbox preload is now live, and it comes in at a massive 169.36 GB, making it one of the larger game downloads many console owners will have to manage this year.

The Square Enix RPG is scheduled to launch on June 3, and fans who want to jump in immediately can begin downloading the game ahead of time. However, the file size is even larger than expected. For comparison, the PlayStation 5 version released in 2024 required around 145 GB, meaning the Xbox version demands noticeably more storage.

That could be a problem, especially for Xbox Series S owners. Some models come with only 512 GB of internal storage, and once system files and other installed games are taken into account, available space becomes limited quickly. With modern blockbuster games regularly passing the 100 GB mark, players may have to delete older titles or invest in expensive expansion storage.

The timing also makes the situation more difficult. Xbox players are already dealing with other large releases, including a major racing game set in Japan that reportedly requires around 130 GB of free space. Installing both games at once could take up a huge portion of a console’s storage, forcing players to decide which titles stay and which ones get removed.

The storage challenge is not limited to Xbox. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is also coming to Switch 2, where the download size is reportedly smaller at 102 GB. Even so, that is still a major burden for a handheld system with 256 GB of internal storage. Players who plan to keep multiple large games installed will likely need to purchase MicroSD Express cards.

Physical game buyers may not avoid the issue either. The Game-Key Card format still relies heavily on downloads, which means owning a boxed copy will not necessarily save much internal storage. For fans hoping to play all three entries in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy on Switch 2, extra storage may become essential.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is much larger than Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, which previously had a preload size of around 110 GB before its Xbox release. The increase is understandable, as Rebirth expands the adventure with larger open areas, upgraded assets, cinematic presentation, and more detailed environments. Still, the final download size may frustrate players who are already struggling with limited console storage.

Game director Naoki Hamaguchi has previously emphasized optimization, particularly for the Switch 2 version, but the scale of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth makes compression a difficult task. The game’s visual quality, open-world structure, and high production values all contribute to its enormous footprint.

With storage prices remaining high, the 169 GB Xbox preload is a reminder of how demanding modern games have become. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may be one of the most anticipated RPG releases for Xbox and Switch 2 players, but before the journey begins, many fans will first need to make room.
