SpaceX Plans to Retire Falcon 9 as Starship Moves Toward Regular Flights

SpaceX is preparing for a major shift in its launch strategy: the eventual retirement of Falcon 9, the rocket that transformed modern spaceflight. Elon Musk said the company plans to wind down both Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy once Starship becomes reliable enough to fly several times per week.

According to Musk, the goal is to move scarce engineering and production resources toward Starship so SpaceX can dramatically increase launch frequency. If Starship can eventually launch multiple times per day, it would mark a new era for orbital transportation and space infrastructure.

Falcon 9 has earned its place as one of the most successful rockets ever built. Since its first flight in 2010, it has launched nearly 700 times and became the first orbital-class rocket to land and reuse its first-stage booster. That breakthrough helped lower launch costs and made frequent missions far more realistic.

Even so, the transition away from Falcon 9 will not happen quickly. Falcon 9 remains SpaceX’s most dependable launch vehicle, while Starship is still undergoing flight testing. SpaceX will need Starship to prove it can operate safely, repeatedly, and at scale before Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy can be phased out.

Starship is much larger and more powerful than Falcon 9. The current version stands about 124.4 meters tall, compared with Falcon 9’s 70 meters. It is designed to carry more than 100 tons to low Earth orbit, far above Falcon 9’s roughly 25-ton capacity and Falcon Heavy’s estimated 63-ton capability.

One of the biggest reasons SpaceX wants Starship operational is Starlink. Falcon 9 has carried a huge portion of the company’s satellite launches in recent years, including hundreds of Starlink missions. However, SpaceX’s next-generation Starlink satellites are expected to be larger and built specifically for Starship’s payload bay, making Falcon 9 less suitable for future deployment plans.

NASA missions could keep Falcon 9 flying for several more years. SpaceX is still expected to use Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon for astronaut and cargo missions to the International Space Station, which is planned to remain active until at least 2030. Starship has not yet been designed or certified to dock with the station, and its massive size could create challenges for the aging orbital laboratory.

Beyond Earth orbit, Starship is central to SpaceX’s long-term ambitions. NASA has already selected a Starship-based lunar lander for the Artemis program, including missions intended to return astronauts to the Moon. A specialized version of Starship is expected to support future lunar landings and help build the foundation for deeper space exploration.

For now, Falcon 9 remains the backbone of SpaceX’s launch business. But the company’s future is clearly focused on Starship. If SpaceX can make Starship as reliable as Falcon 9 while unlocking far greater payload capacity and launch frequency, the retirement of Falcon 9 could become one of the most important turning points in the history of commercial spaceflight.
