Apple Watch being explored with cameras as part of the AI push

Exploring the Future: Apple Watch Could Soon Feature Cameras as Part of AI Vision Initiative

For years, rumors have circulated about Apple potentially integrating multiple cameras into the Apple Watch. While many dismissed these ideas as merely speculative, recent reports suggest that Apple indeed has significant plans for these cameras, tied closely to its ambitions in artificial intelligence.

According to insiders, the future Apple Watch models could feature cameras that interact intelligently with real-world objects through Visual Intelligence. This move aligns with Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance their AI capabilities, which have lagged slightly due to various challenges.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg highlights in his ‘Power On’ newsletter that these camera-equipped Apple Watches will support AI functions, though specifics remain under wraps. While iPhones are the primary devices for capturing high-quality images and videos, having a camera on an Apple Watch offers added convenience, allowing users to quickly capture moments without reaching for their phones. However, due to the compact nature of the watch, it’s unlikely to deliver the same image quality as iPhones.

Apple reportedly aims to extend Visual Intelligence across different devices, including new AirPods with cameras. The tech giant intends to rely more on its own AI models rather than those from competitors like OpenAI and Google.

Both the standard Apple Watch and the Apple Watch Ultra models could receive these camera upgrades. In the regular version, the camera might be embedded under the display, while the additional size of the Ultra could allow a sensor positioned beside the Digital Crown. These updates may debut as soon as 2027, potentially alongside camera-equipped AirPods.

However, these exciting developments depend on Apple’s ability to overcome recent setbacks. The company has already faced a class-action lawsuit due to delays in its AI advancements, including the postponed release of an upgraded Siri, now expected in 2026. Additionally, there has been a leadership shuffle, with Mike Rockwell stepping in to replace AI head John Giannandrea, bringing fresh perspectives to Apple’s AI endeavors.

Despite challenges, Apple’s vision for integrating AI across its devices remains ambitious, promising new functionalities and enhanced user experiences in the coming years.
