Epic Games, the company known for the popular game Fortnite, has recently rolled out its own mobile app store within the European Union for iOS users and on a global scale for Android users. This move introduces new competition in the mobile app market, presenting alternative options for game enthusiasts and developers alike.
The Epic Games Store’s debut features an array of games such as Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys. Epic Games has expressed its strategy to partner with more developers to expand the game offerings on its platform going forward.
Moreover, Epic Games has ventured into a collaboration with AltStore PAL, an independent mobile store which will offer its services free of charge, supported by a grant from Epic Games. Future plans are also set to integrate Epic Games with Aptoide’s iOS store in the EU and the ONE Store for Android devices.
This development is a milestone for Epic Games as Fortnite makes a comeback on iOS after a hiatus of over four years following Apple’s decision to remove the game from its App Store. The reintroduction has been buoyed by prolonged legal tussles between Epic Games and Apple, as well as recent legislative shifts due to the EU’s Digital Markets Act that now compels Apple to accommodate competing stores.
Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, showcased a sense of victory on behalf of developers and consumers, expressing gratitude towards the European Commission. Sweeney asserts that this is a step forward in enhancing developer and consumer benefit through increased competition and choice in the mobile platform market.
Epic Games has recognized the complexities involved in the installation of its app store on both iOS and Android platforms. They attribute this to the intricate installation procedures put in place by Apple and Google, which include multi-step processes, convoluted device settings, and deterrent warnings. To address these challenges, Epic Games has released instructional videos aimed at guiding users through the installation process for their app store on these devices.
The introduction of the Epic Games Store signifies a pivotal challenge to Apple’s dominance in the app store arena. It is a momentous shift that could potentially reshape the landscape of mobile gaming and app distribution, promising to provide more choices to both developers and end-users.
