Intel Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPU Refresh Reportedly Canceled, Nova Lake To Replace Core Ultra 200 1

Enhanced Performance: Intel Arrow Lake-S & HX Refresh CPUs with Boosted Clocks, Unchanged NPU

Intel’s upcoming Arrow Lake-S and Arrow Lake-HX refresh CPUs are not set to deliver any significant updates to the NPU architecture, leaving enthusiasts and gamers wondering what the refresh truly offers.

Initially, Intel had hinted at a major upgrade to the NPU for both desktop “S” and enthusiast mobile “HX” platforms, which would have increased the die size. However, recent insights reveal that these anticipated changes will not materialize. The refreshed CPUs will maintain the 13 TOPS NPU compute performance seen in the current generation, without alterations to the architecture or clock speeds.

Speculation suggests that the only notable enhancement will be slightly boosted clock speeds. However, this modest change is expected to yield just a 2-5% performance increase, potentially coupled with higher power consumption and elevated temperatures—issues familiar to fans of Intel’s most recent Raptor Lake refresh.

Intel has been subtly optimizing the Arrow Lake chips, including the Core Ultra 200S boost that enhances memory performance. Yet, these tweaks are largely at the platform level rather than architectural.

Moreover, gaming performance will remain static, which raises questions about the purpose of these refreshes. It appears Intel aims to provide new offerings for the LGA 1851 platform, which has not performed well in the retail market. Motherboard manufacturers are likely pushing Intel for fresh innovations to help move inventory before the transition to the next-generation Nova Lake’s LGA 1954 platform. The Arrow Lake Refresh CPUs are expected to debut in the latter half of this year, bringing an update soon.

As a part of Intel’s desktop CPU evolution, the Arrow Lake Refresh aligns with the company’s continued pattern of incremental improvements. While it may not bring groundbreaking changes, it keeps Intel’s latest platforms in line with current technology standards, awaiting more substantial innovations down the road.
