X is preparing to add a new warning label for edited images, marking certain posts as “manipulated media.” The change surfaced through a brief post from Elon Musk, who reshared a message teasing an “Edited visuals warning.” The feature announcement itself came from the X account DogeDesigner, which Musk frequently uses as an informal channel for rolling out updates.
What’s getting attention isn’t just the idea of labeling altered images—it’s the lack of clarity around how X will decide what counts as “manipulated.” Right now, it’s not known whether the warning will apply only to AI-generated images, to AI-enhanced edits, or also to traditional photo edits made with tools like Photoshop. Without those details, even basic questions remain unanswered: Is this meant for obvious deepfakes and synthetic media, or could it also catch everyday edits like cropping, color correction, retouching, or removing an object from the background?
The post promoting the feature suggests it could make it harder for major media organizations to spread misleading pictures or clips, and presents it as something new for the platform. But historically, the company did have an approach to altered media before it became X. In earlier years, the platform used labels for content described as manipulated, deceptively altered, or fabricated—offering warnings instead of outright removal in some cases. Those older guidelines weren’t limited to AI and could include edits like selective cropping, slowing down video, overdubbing audio, or changing subtitles.
Whether X is reviving that earlier playbook, rewriting it for the AI era, or building something entirely different hasn’t been explained. X’s current help information includes policies against inauthentic media, but enforcement has been inconsistent. Recent incidents involving deepfakes and non-consensual synthetic imagery have highlighted how quickly manipulated content can spread, raising the stakes for any labeling system that claims to improve trust and transparency.
Labeling media sounds straightforward until you get into the real-world nuance. The line between an “AI image,” an “AI-edited image,” and a traditionally edited photo is increasingly blurry. Many photographers and designers now use modern editing tools that quietly include AI-based features, even when the resulting picture is still fundamentally a real photograph. Other large platforms have already learned how messy automated AI labeling can get. When one major social network introduced AI image labels in 2024, it mistakenly flagged real photos as AI-made. That platform later adjusted its wording to a more neutral label to avoid incorrectly telling users an image was definitively “made with AI.”
That’s the backdrop X is stepping into. If the company wants “manipulated media” labels to build trust rather than create confusion, users will likely need more transparency on key points: What signals trigger the label? Does it rely on metadata, automated detection, user reports, or a mix? Does the label apply to memes and satire? Will there be an appeals or dispute process beyond Community Notes? And will X distinguish between fully synthetic images, heavily altered media, and normal editing that’s been part of online photo sharing for decades?
There’s also a growing industry push toward provenance standards—systems designed to show where a piece of media came from and how it was edited using tamper-evident metadata. One of the best-known efforts is C2PA, a standards body focused on content authenticity and provenance. Related initiatives aim to make it easier for platforms to determine whether an image has verified origin information attached, and whether it has been altered in a traceable way. Major tech and media organizations are involved in these efforts, and some consumer products already surface provenance signals to users.
For now, X hasn’t said whether its new “manipulated media” warning will rely on any of these standards, or whether it’s focused mainly on AI-generated content, deepfakes, and synthetic edits. It also remains unclear whether the feature truly is brand-new or simply an evolution of older labeling policies. Until X explains how the system works, the announcement raises as many questions as it answers—especially for creators, journalists, and everyday users who want to know whether their edited photos will be flagged, and what “manipulated media” will actually mean on one of the world’s most influential social platforms.
