EA Studio Shake-Up Reportedly Ends Secret Sims Project Lotus

EA pauses unannounced The Sims game Project Lotus amid major company restructuring

Electronic Arts has put development on an unannounced The Sims game, codenamed Project Lotus, on hold as part of a major internal restructuring that is reshaping several parts of the publisher’s business.

The company shared the update in an October 21 letter to employees from chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber. While some reports have described Project Lotus as canceled, EA’s own wording says development has been “paused,” leaving the future of the mysterious Sims project unclear.

At this stage, EA has not revealed what Project Lotus was intended to be. The company has not shared whether it was a new mainline entry, a spin-off, a mobile-focused Sims experience, or a different type of life simulation project. EA also did not say how far along development had progressed or whether any ideas, technology, or assets from Project Lotus could be reused in future The Sims titles.

The main reason behind the pause appears to be EA’s decision to focus more resources on another Sims project known as Project Evergreen. According to the company, shifting attention away from Project Lotus will give the Evergreen team more time and support to fully realize its vision.

For fans of The Sims, this suggests EA is not stepping away from the franchise. Instead, the publisher appears to be narrowing its focus and placing greater emphasis on the project it believes has stronger long-term potential. The Sims remains one of EA’s most recognizable and enduring brands, and Project Evergreen now seems to be the company’s priority for the series going forward.

The restructuring also brings much bigger changes elsewhere in the company. EA confirmed that BioWare is closing, along with its Edmonton workspace. As a result, early development on the next Mass Effect game has ended.

The company did not provide an official number of affected employees in its letter, though reports citing people familiar with the situation claim around 400 workers are being laid off across EA. That would represent roughly 3 percent of the company’s workforce, with around 50 of those cuts said to be connected to BioWare.

The free-to-play skate. project is still moving forward, but EA says it will continue with a smaller and more focused team. That suggests the game remains part of EA’s future plans, even as the company reduces the scale of some development groups.

Despite the cuts and project changes, EA says it remains committed to several major upcoming games. Marvel’s Iron Man is still in development, as is the next Star Wars Jedi title. Battlefield will also continue, with Respawn and DICE set to work together on an unannounced shooter-related project.

EA also plans to keep investing in Apex Legends, including new multiplayer modes designed to expand the game’s long-term appeal. The EA Sports FC franchise remains a key part of the company’s strategy as well.

Two additional sports projects are also in development. Project Gridiron is described as a social-first, open-world American football game, while Fight Night is making a return after years of fan demand for a new entry in the boxing series.

These changes come shortly after EA completed its move to become a private company. A consortium involving PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners finalized a $55 billion acquisition on August 4. The deal was financed in part with about $20 billion in debt, placing the company under a new financial structure as it reviews its priorities.

EA’s employee letter frames the restructuring as the result of a wider business review. The company says it is now focused on three main goals: strengthening its biggest franchises, expanding its audience, and transforming the way it operates.

The letter does not directly mention EA’s new owners, but the timing of the restructuring has drawn attention. Large-scale reviews and strategic shifts are common after major acquisitions, particularly when debt financing is involved.

EA says it will share more about its future direction during a global town hall in November. Until then, the future of Project Lotus remains uncertain, BioWare’s closure marks the end of a major chapter in gaming history, and EA’s biggest franchises appear to be taking center stage in the company’s next phase.
